I would defer to someone like Coach Izzy here on the board that is also a USAW weightlifting coach with athletes at the National and International level.

I apologize for turning this into an essay... but you only have one back... and the recovery time takes away from the diving or other fun activities you might be involved with. Exercise should enhance your physicality and quality of life, not take away from it... lol... Somewhere in the middle of everyone's advice is a path that's right for you... you'll figure it out. :)

I really appreciate all the thoughtful advice and can see those exercises will be useful- thanks :)!

Luckily my mentor, who is also my chiropractor and a very active tech diver, is teaching me some doubles lifting techniques. I'd still like to build more strength though - especially in relationship to actually wearing doubles topside. Unfortunately, I do have an old lingering pinch in my upper back so not all exercises (such as squat) which puts direct weight on the discs work for me.

I'm a little concerned about my upper back and diving doubles, but was able to hike 80lb loads in climbing without major problem, so with a little proper training and extra strength it should all work out ok. I just have to be careful.

I've heard Izzy isn't on the board much, but it appears I may be able to ask him some specific training questions indirectly. Think given my unique situation it might be best to see what Izzy suggests before I switch my training.

Thanks again!

We visited Izzy when we went out to Seattle this summer... great guy and very helpful!

They just moved their operation, Next Step Conditioning, to a different location on Bainbridge Island, so I'm sure that's had him pretty busy. He responds pretty quickly to messages that I've sent him on Facebook in the past couple of months.

Thursday 10/29 - C25K program with my best friend. Total distance 2.9 miles for about 40 minutes. Good times.

Sarita- Haven't been on here much and just saw your post on the C2K program. What week are you on? Congrats on the progress. Your run time is similar to mine... mine might even be slower! LOL. Am running my first 5K in a couple weeks, and have just started back training after taking the summer off.
Good luck everybody on all your fitness goals!

A friend promised to chat with him for me. Think it's best to see where that goes before I bug him directly. If it goes nowhere, perhaps I can check back with you for a contact?

Congrats Sarita! That's awesome! Hope you can make the next M&G on Dec 5th it's been too long since I've seen you.

10/29 1.5 hours swimming laps on and off. Really excited I've hit the goals. Now to iron out the wrinkles and push farther.

Scuba Jenny - I am on Week 6, so in that first stage of transitioning to doing more jogging than walking during sessions. I am doing my 1st 5k in about 2 weeks, so I won't be fine with the program quite yet, but am looking forward to trying! :)

I am signed up with a swim instructor this weekend with the sane goal - iron out the wrinkles. :)

What are you training for? A Triathlon? I just need to hit requirements for the next class in mid Feb. Just passed that goal by a ways, so now on to blowing past the basics in style & have 3 months left to get there :).
