So it seems to me the second-stage is junk but how about the first stage? I'm not even sure what the difference is compared to the earlier Sherwood (balanced) first (apart from the "blow" issue :D )

The idea of a piston reg with dry-sealed chamber appeals to me.

Hi Shazzman,

Glad to hear you are thinking about doing some local diving. there are some great diving in Ontario, it can be a little more challenging than Caribbean diving but it's more rewarding IMO.

If you plan on doing any Diving here a Sealed regulator is KEY especially for Tobomorey, Labor day weekend the temp was down in the 40's.

The Z2x is a great regulator, ensuring it's the sealer version. these regulator are great, have top notch workmanship. The recommended service interval is 300 dives or 2 years, and carry a (limited) lifetime warranty regardless of service history.

I like Diaphragm 1st stages, like the MK17 or the Aqualung Titan/Legend (Supreme), as they are bulletproof.

Value wise it's hard to beat the Aqualung Titan LX Supreme. It's a great sealed 1st stage, 1 HP & 4 LP, the weight is not bad for traveling (its lighter than the Legend!), the A.C.D. tech is great at protecting the 1st stage from contaminates. Aqualung is also a global company and that means if needed you can get parts/service worldwide.

my $.02

I am a big fan of the old Sherwoods, they might be simple but are rock solid. The SR-1 on the other hand is way over engineered, too many parts solving a non existant problem. I would go with most any other brand or model ( including the "standard" Sherwoods) over the SR-1.
