My idea is that YOU are in charge of testing your software.
You are asking for customers to do your own job.

Several of us on the board have asked the nice people at Oceanic to let us test the software before it was released. Doug took us up on the offer. When it comes to beta software, the rule is caveat emptor.

This software isn't perfect, but it is getting dramatically better with each release. Adding your input will help them improve future releases. It might not make the next release, but it will be on their to do list.

Please feel free to add more details, or additional bugs to this thread. It will help make a better product for all of us. But please keep your comments on a positive note. If we make it too hard on Oceanic, we won't have this kind of opportunity in the future.

It seems to me the bug is the whole thing.
I just tried the last release : Oceanlog_2.1.1_Full.exe uploaded two days ago.

Dude, lighten up. It's a free beta release. The idea here is to try it out and report back any suggestions or bugs found so they can be fixed and the program improved.

----------------------------------------------

One thing I forgot in my previous post is that I'd like to see the PDC display that tracks along as you scroll through the tabular data like in the older version.

Have I been that rude ?

I'm not crying nor shouting or using bad words.
Most people would. Even though all oceanic representatives I 've been in touch are nice people, they just have been helpless.

let's talk about facts.

We own two pp2. Santa Claus found useful not to forget the cable.

Don't you forget that crossing the Ocean is quite expensive so one pp2+qd costs a bit more than 900$ and the cable is close to 200$.

My LDS didn't carry it, so they had to order it. We had to wait fot 2 months. It came with release 1.0.4 (not a beta release but a commercial one !!!) and we discovered that french is not available. Even the owner's book was in english. That is not only unfair but is just unlawful and the seller was really sorry but couldn't help.

Too bad for my wife....

After our first diving week-end mine went off but never went back on : only displaying it's serial number and microcode tag (took two weeks to get a new one, three months to get p&p money back).

Summer vacation : cable didn't work after first week (still waiting for the new one).

Oceanlog updates are free. Great.

But we did pay a lot for what has mainly be, by now, only a black, unuseful wire.

I paid for and was expecting to get a multilangage software (or at least a french one), a metric one with export capacities.

I've been trying every new update since last Christmas. No beta but official releases.

I reported the missings and the bugs to shop owner, oceanic tec, had talks with the big boss, with their translator... kind people, no proper answer.

I've heard caveat emptor I'd reply Vox clamavit in desertum.

Nine months after I bought it, I'm still stuck with basic miscalculation, no handling of french, no handling of metric, and the main difference with the earlier releases is that my data are now locked in the new database whereas I could read them previously. Big deal.

So I don't mean to be rude to anybody.

More feeling hopeless and unable to understand how those people claming to run a "worldwide" company cannot compute basic figures and keep on asking for new tips when they don't even meet the minimal standards.

I sure would be glad to help things work better but at least they have to start and give us the basics for our money.

If Doug can't take it I'm sorry for him, but hidding facts or playing deaf would not be the best move.

Nothing personnal, Doug, but I wish we had not bought your products.

Have I been that rude ?

No you haven't, and I can definitely appreciate your feelings given the situation you've described. I'd be mad too. I've had to weigh the risk of what will I do if the product fails when I've ordered things from the UK before. It can be a really tough decision. Unfortunately I think you're in the wrong thread for this. A problem as serious as yours really belongs in it's own thread, not jumbled into one that's unrelated.

Good luck, I hope you can get this resolved to your satisfaction quickly.

Encore,

I can understand, fully, your exasperation!!! Each of us who use this software has experienced exactly the same errors and problems.

Some of us, however, took it upon ourselves and the medium of the ScubaBoard.com to volunteer as beta site testers for the Oceanic software. Doug and his associates were kind enough to honor our requests and let us test the revisions. We understood from the outset that this was beta testing and were prepared to deal with that which was presented.

I think Oceanic has taken a most excellent opportunity and avenue to include its customers in the overall customer satisfaction program of the company.

As some wise man once said (and please forgive me that I paraphrase), "You can satisfy some of the people all the time and all of the people some of the time; but ya can't satisfy all of the people all of the time."

Is there a version for Mac? I would love to download my information, but this update is for PC's only...:(

Doug Krause:
Well, in light of the recent posts I'm somewhat proud to announce that we have released version 2.1.1. Thanks to all for your comments on the beta version - as always, specific problems or requests will be greatly appreciated.

Am I correct in assuming that all the issues reported here are fixed now?

Have I been that rude ?

No.

The CD-ROM that ships with our dive computers contains operating manauls in multiple languages, including French. For printed manuals, it is ultimately up to our international partners to provide in their respective territories.

As for OceanLog, we have previously produced (contained on the same CD-ROM mentioned) versions in a variety of languages, again, where the international partner elected to participate. We have not begun the process of translating this latest round (2.X) as we are still in the process of making changes, as is obvious here. This latest round was fairly significant for us as it combined several individual programs into one - and ultimately led to my participation on this board, and a dramatically improved product. I am confident at this point that while we will always continue to modify the program, we have a very stabile platform to work from. We are beginning now to work with our international partners to provide translation and will implement them as soon as complete. In the next couple of weeks we will begin collecting the foreign language manuals and software programs for posting on the web site.

As for problems with metric conversions, I am open to addressing any specific issues that are presented. Feel free to PM or email me if you are willing to discuss further.
