i assume you asking due to covid.....we use Virkon. but in general, at least before covid, i doubt many shops ever bother to actually sanitize their rental gear.
Soapy water should work!

Rental gear is sanitized? Where are you diving and can you get me Kanye's autograph next time you're there?
I use Steramine on all my rental regs, masks, snorkels and manual inflation valve. Wetsuits get Odo-Ban treatment.
Does it get too expensive?
Not at all.
