To those who carry big knives, what are the reactions you normally get and yours?

Or stabbing food, when and where you can legally do so

That is the reason I carry a pointy knife instead of one of the blunt ones. Flounder can be taken with a knife almost as easily as with a spear.

I have got a flounder or two with my BFK. I also use it to dig hardshell clams, the 71/2" blade is just right for getting under the clams and releasing it from it's muddy hiding place.

I've been seeing a lot of big knife threads lately, so I gotta ask. At what point does a knife become a "big" knife? I carry a Wenoka knife that I wouldn't classify as big or crazy. It looks like this:

sqtkbst.jpg

It's got a square/blunt tip, and the only real use it gets other than cutting the occasional kelp strand is resetting my analogue depth gauge post-dive. That said, it's nearly 10" long. Is it a "big" knife?

I think that's a completely subjective thing.

I think most of us tend to equate "bigger than practical" with BFK. For me, that would mean a blade longer than 7". For me, a blade that long would make it clumsier and less useful as a tool. For some any knife with a blade over 4" might qualify.

That's not a knife! This is a knife!
You know, I actually have one of those. I got it as part of a set of gear I inherited from my dad. US Divers 50 cu.ft tank with hard pack, Aquarius regulator and an old US divers BC. I don't have the BC anymore but I still have everything else. The knife lives in the toolkit of my Jeep. That thing is indeed a beast of a knife.

I tell them, if I even acknowledge them, to mind their own business.

I am a wolf. The human sheep are domesticated animals, chewing their cud and seeking approval from the heard of other sheep. I am the wolf that will eat them. I do not ask their sheep opinion of us wolves, nor do wolves care what the sheep that they eat think about it all.

It was said to me recently, in person, that I was mellowing out, so there you go, mellow out, uh, huh.

Haha nemrod +1.

If it takes a BFK to make me feel more comfortable while diving then I don't care what anyone says it's getting strapped to my leg. More of a peace of mind thing.

Also like cutting up sea urchins and feeding them to friendly blue groupers in return for some nice photos!!!

That's not a knife! This is a knife! Great for defending yourself from all sorts of threats from the deep! Who cares what anyone thinks other than you? Use what works for you.

Very much like the BFK that I use. I never defended myself with it but I've liberated more than a couple of artifacts from local wrecks with it.

They'll love you when it's time to cut the rye bread.

Try that with your girly-man EMT Shears.
