Let me ask this regarding the Akona and carry on type bags. I have run into not only (smaller) size restrictions than domestic (and perhaps South America) and also weight limits for carry-on. If in such case the Akona had to be checked through or gate checked, how do those fins fare strapped to the outside?

Once you’ve pulled out your reg, camera and anything with a battery you might have enough room to just throw your fins in the bag- these are xxl fourth element tech fins (not my traveling fins, just the ones that were drying in my shower after the weekend drysuit dive) Although, now that I dug this bag out of the travel bin to see how some fins would fit, I’m even more down on the zipper. Both slides are completely frozen and degrading to white powder; so, even if I wanted to, I couldn’t show you how it closes with the fins inside ☹️

Thanks, looks like a nice bag and a nice idea ruined by a substandard and inappropriate zipper. Hmmm.

I once went to Jamaica mostly to visit a Jamaican friend but we did some diving also. Upon coming into Houston the customs man went through my bag looking for the good ganja and other illegal stuff I had none of because I smoked it all there :eyebrow:. He got to one zipper and it would not open. He freaked and told me the zipper must be opened. I told him it has not opened in years but he was free to cut it open if he wished to. I told him though, you can reach in on the inside and feel the pocket and see that there is nothing in there. Dive bags with aluminum zippers, how stupid, I rarely use that word in reference to people because it is not nice to but in this case, that is stupid for whoever specified that zipper in the process.

I put my hydros, regs, computers, and misc into a pelican case and use my wetsuit for padding, stick the fins in my checked bag. Essentially I keep the high value items with me and has worked well on several flights.

I do the same concerning high value items, only in lighter bags, what pelican case do you use? I have one for my save a dive kit and it's heavy for what it is.

I use a 1510 which works for all the global airlines. I had used suitcases before but the pelican can be locked and will withstand anything a luggage handler could do to it if it has to be checked. It is heavy but I have yet to have an issue.

The 1535 Air (8.33 pounds) is 3.7 pounds lighter than the 1510 (11.99 pounds), same external dimensions. Those pounds are valuable to me. Mine totes camera equipment. Not sure how a BC would fit into one.

Just priced the 1535 here  $$$ .

A friend of mine got popped $600 for two overweight carryon cases by Turkish Airlines summer before last. I skated through. That only has to happen once or twice and then the $ seem more reasonable. The pounds count, I rather equipment than the case ;).
