Hello everyone, I'm back after a weekend of entertaining a group of out-of-town guests... ok, this weekend is the big Malibu get-together. I just looked at WetSands - and "whoa!", I've never seen a NW swell prediction that big. Malibu is usually protected from NW swells, but again, I've never seen that big! The sites east of point dume are even more protected, so worst case, we can drive a little big extra to get to some calm waters.

With respect to where to dive in Leo, I have done numerous dives off south Leo (lifeguard station #1) and sequit point (lifeguard station #3), both great dives, completely different areas. we would probably have people drop-off / pick-up divers from these sites if we dive them to avoid a long walk. I know Melvin has dove North Leo before, which is closer to the campground, but I can't vouch for that site.

Early Sat. morning I can drive past several dive sites and check out the waves, and see how the swells are affecting the various areas.

Scott,
Yesterday we were at lifeguard station #2, which is at the little cove shown in my photos. It looks like a nice place to dive; there were some kelp beds out about 100ft. from shore, and looked like lots of rocks. I didn't check out the other sites you mentioned. Is station #2 a dive site?

Anywhere can be a dive site. There seems to be good diving anywhere in Leo, the reefs and kelp seem fairly continuous. I have my own favorite areas I get to from nearby stations #1 and #3. I haven't tried entering at station #2, not because I think anything bad about it, just because I haven't made time to try it yet.

Rocks and kelp are both good signs. Did you see breaching whales? That would get me in the water there for sure.

Hey All,

I might try to rent fins (can't find mine...somewhere in storage in Salt Lake), a wetsuit & hood, and get tanks and join you guys on one of the days. I need to bite the bullet and get out in this SoCal water sooner or later...this weekend might be the perfect time. Is the best place to rent gear, given the location, gonna be Malibu Divers?

Hmmm, I see I'm on the sleeping over list, didn't know that ok..........will see what I can do.

I am no longer able to make this Sunday... my drysuit is in the shop and Christmas is looming... too much to do and too little time!

Have fun, guys!

Jennifer

I wish I could make it, but I have to pass on the December Wrinkles Dive!
I know you will have a great time, so please take some pictures for the rest of us!

I hope the conditions are great and the diving safe!

Yep, I told you guys it's too cold to camp. All you need is a bit of a breeze, and it feels like -90f. Dropping like flies over here...........

I think the best way is just to call around, for the best price, I would probably try Sports Chalet as well.

Today's Wetsand predictions for the weekend are pretty much the same as before, though slightly smaller (6-10 feet in the morning). What worries me is that they are predicting the angle to be around 270-280 degrees, which I think is directly from the west, not northwest. That makes me think that even the south facing beaches in Malibu might see some big surf (due to diffraction/refraction around the point). But we'll see. The swell model for today already shows the energy starting to shift to the west.

I'm gonna bring my boggie boards, and maybe my surfboard.
