Okay....I found a boat and I want to make an offer.

How do I go about this? Can I tie it up with a deposit pending a marine survey....(like a house and the inspection?) Any tips would be appreciated.

No, commercial use planned....it was an idea I have ruled out.

Advice on the steps would help.
 
Word it that way...but include that you want a sea trial, too. Make sure you get a good surveyor. I've seen too many surveyors who are worthless when it comes to the really intricate stuff. Beyond that I am not a good source of info on how to negotiate the purchase of a boat. I still remember that August 3, 1986...all I said was "Jim, its Bruce, I want it in yellow, how much money should I bring."
 
Paying to have a newer boat surveyed is not real nessary unless you insurance demands it. Just find someone who knows boats to go look at it for you and buy me a beer after. What can be a good idea on middle aged motors is to have a compression test done. Again, someone who know boats and likes beer can prolly do that for you. Call me tomorrow and I'll put you in touch with someone that likes beer and boats :-)
 
the engines are new.

The hull is '90.

I am wanting the hydrolics and electrical looked over.
 
I'd also have someone look for stress cracks in the hull joints, ribs and motor mounts. You'd be surprised where one might find mildew or even dryrot. If there re lifelines and stancions, check the bases and whether they are screwed or bolted in place and how secure they are. Look for spots where anodization has been worn off of aluminum; look for corossion on aluminum. If the boat is kept in the water, check the zinc plates; if it isn't but will be, check for attachment points. How much crud is at the bottom of the fuel tank? What is the condition of the battery terminals? If the boat is kept in the water, check the condition of the bottom paint; if it isn't but will be, check on suitability for painting. Has there been any past structural damage that has had to be repaiired? Are alll engine instruments functioning and accurate? When were the fire extinguishers last serviced? Are flares current?

Remember: The first 90% of the expense is in buying a boat. The other 90% is in getting it ready.
 
The first one looks good and is ready to go for your needs.....and the first one on the list you sent me even sleeps 4 with a little kitchen...nice for crossings....
 
that is one seriously sexy dive platform. for the PNW i'd prefer the top to come back a little further to get more out of the rain, but otherwise that looks like the boat i'd like to own...
 
Even on fg. BTW: My industrial hygenesist friend tells me that mold will grow on even "clean" window glass. (Also that 1/3 of the world's bio-mass is mold.)
 
very interesting. I did not know that. Well, they are in a fishing tournement and I am just waiting to try and get him to say yes to the survey. We are having 25+ winds today with big gusts from the storm falling apart, AND there is the biggest swell of the season coming in on the south shore.

Lamont, I think you saw the first boat, not the Pusrsuit.

The first one is a custom Glass-cat made here in Hawaii, very fule effeicient. The Pursuit has a cabin that has a double bed, head, galley, and outriggers. "captain" told me to have the hull checked out for the foam may be heavy if it is 15 years old. We are still trying to wrap our minds around what 240 gallons of fuel will cost.

did not know they had those....I wonder if they study biorusting in shipwrecks...my daughter just did that for her science project. Seems certain bacteria (aerobic?) can promote oxidation of Fe.
