I've been teaching diving for a rather long time. As a result I have accumulated a fair body of knowledge concerning the special problems that women who dive face. The fact that I am a male does not affect the value of that information. I will grant that my opinion on the advertising photographs that brought about this current conversation are irrelevant to the OP of that thread, but to exclude males from the forum would the information and experience that we have. If there are issues that anyone is answering in a way that is demeaning or offensive to women (or nay other group) on this (or any thread) there are already systems in place to deal with it, avail yourself of those systems.

We socialize differently, we have different "needs" and while the profile of the dive community is starting to show a change, it's still a primarily male community.

Then I must be a man, because among those I know we socialize in the same way and we have the same needs....

New car is as much exciting thing as new dress, or new diving gear.

10 foot pole in my hands, I am gently setting it down on the ground, being careful not to touch anything! Backing away slowly!

If anyone wants to touch this one, you can have my pole.:rofl3:

Well there ye go! I (and I think most men) do get excited about new cars & boats & tools & guns & airplanes & diving gear... even a "new" 15 yr old single malt... But I don't think I've ever been excited about new clothes or shoes in my entire life! Unless, of course, it's a new dress on the Lovely Young Kat :)

PS. you know what gave me the biggest pleasure lately? Buying a very handy dive tools set (it's the size of standard calendar - organizer and has all neccesary tools) - great for travelling, as well as new bindings for my snowboard.

I agree; there comes a time when we must 'fold em'!

All in all though, an interesting thread!

Thanks Leah.

Well, there are behaviors, interests and attitudes that are more typically male (sports, cars, motorcycles, power tools) and that are more typically female (clothing, decor, social events). But there's a spectrum of people within each gender, and some women fall more at the male end (as mania and I clearly do) and some more in the middle, and some are just "girly" (I don't think many of them dive :)).

Oh c'mon Leah - go for it...
Let's have some fun finally. It can be easily on my account....

OK. Most of my male friends go out for drinks. Don't you go out for drinks?
They watch soccer games (soccer is the biggest sport in POland). I watch it too, at least from time to time
They go to the movies. I do too
They go to strip bars, I go with them and have a lot of fun laughing at them
They talk about politics - I do too and love it
They talk about cars - I too
They talk about girls I talk about boys
They talk about work, I too
They buy gadgets, I too (mhmm...my beautiful new IPod Nano...)
And so on, so on. Most of these activities we do together.
I see no difference in my way of socializing and theirs. As well as in my needs and theirs.

And this is why we carry our doubles ourselves

PS. OK, now we wnet off topic so if you want I can delete this post - just let me know

Well I have more in common with my guy pals than I do my gal pals, but I am still all girl! Just because I drive a truck, work on it myself, built my own 430 sq ft work shop myself and dug the foundation myself, fish , dive, do plumbing, carpentry, like to go camping doesn't mean I don't like to sit down with a nice piece of china and have high tea. I have actually been banned by some of my married friends from talking their hubbies for putting visions of tools dancing in their heads.

So while I do have some over lap with men in the things that I am interested in, I am still a woman who thinks like a woman. And I still have the physical isssues that women have to deal with. And men think like men. Now some of us have more respect for both our own gender and the other gender than others and some have less.

By the way, I don't mind being off topic a bit as long is it is light hearted and respectful. I think that is really the point of my thread. If we have one group really disrespecting another group-- it does not help things. Like the one thread that I read where the gal was really mortified to even ask a personal and she got several nice replys and then some guy posts after you can just feel her embarrassment oozzing from the page--he posts well I have never had a period and don't know anything about tampons or how to deal with all that stuff, but hang in there little lady. I think he was off base.

In the other thread as I have said many times it is the disrespect for the opinions of others. Just because I don't like an ad doesn't mean I want to enslave children, be mean to the homeless and destroy the planet as some accused. I don't like the ad and think is not in the best interest of any company that wants to capture market share from women just as it would not capture market share of men to have run the same ad with a naked man in that harness.

Any marketing campaign must take into account the target market. There are a couple of car commericials running in the US right now. It is clear their target market for thier car is a middle aged man that is either recently divorced or in a bad relationship. It seems to play in the feelings of such and get them to want this car as a way of escape. It is an ad that plays to emotion rather than performance of the product. Ad campaigns often play to emotion or sex appeal and finding one the works is no easy job. That being said sometimes, it should be obivios that something is not a good idea, but turn on the TV in any country and bad ads will abound.

In the scuba industry we have pretty close contact with the companies and after a couple of posts by piikki two giants made a change. Salvo pulled the pick and Scuba Board the largest and most influential scuba forum in the world made a change to make it easier for people to know they were in the women's views forum so the could formulate a proper response--or flee like the wind if need be. While not solving world hunger and ending war, it makes a little difference to those who view the Salvo site and those who post here.
