Wow, long post just to say you like Mares regs. If you have been around here long enough, and read some of my posts you would see why I dont like Mares regs. I have said it over and over. Im sick of saying it. I have used the Abyss for a few years, and other mares regs. Ive dealt with the company in the capacity of being a store manager of a dive shop. I know them well. I also know that you were the science editor of Rodales. You seem to keep bringing that up. I dont care. All I have to go on is my own personal experiences with the company, the regs, and the service parts. I know what I dont like about them. I wont use them again!!!
Yes, we all know Apeks didnt have a good reputation before the TX series regs. But guess what??? Now they do, and they are one of the MOST popular for technical diving. Period...

No, I dont own the best of everything, and no I dont own a harley. I just like to have good quality equipment for diving that works well and can be serviced easily with readily available parts.

Also, I believe your last statement is 100% true. Just take out the "DIVE".

Thanks for your post. I have been nourished by the knowledge that you have just given me...

Laser:
I find Gregs knowledge of regs pretty impressive. I've read posts on a couple boards, and you always explain your thoughts, not simply say, " this reg is good." You seem to have a nice working knowledge of regs that are out there. That said, I dive Apeks, but have nothing against others. I've only been able to dive a couple others, SP being one of them. It breathed great.

Greg,

I agree with Laser. I have enjoyed your posts and find your knowledge, background and writing style "refreshing". Keep posting Greg!

I personally enjoy the MARES Abyss (as well as a vintage Voit Trieste II) (-; and appreciate your perspective.

Hey guys... I received a complaint about this thread... something about rudeness.
I really can't believe any of you would be rude now... would you?

Anyway... I started reading the thread but my old eyes got too tired to finish so I thought I'd just come here to the end of the line and say, ya'll need to go divin'.

Makes you Purdy. :D

Mares.. Mares...
Lessee here, gotta have some in all this stuff..
flip... flip.. dig.. dig...
Ah, here we are, old ESA mask. Loved it... 'til it started leaking like a sieve around all six lenses (after about three years of rough use) - might get another one some day.
Hmmm... dig.. dig.. pull.. dig...
Oh, yeah, a Mares VS reg, circa '89... still works great; rigged for a hang tank/deco bottle. The Lovely Young Kat used it as her primary reg for several years. Never a speck of trouble with it.
That's all the Mares stuff I see in the pile right now, but I have no real gripes about their stuff.

Well news from my neck of the woods is that Diver Direct have dropped the price to $295 for an abyss. Is that a good price? Cant find if on LP, so dont know if its quite that kind of price or not yet. The guy in the store said that they were dropping the price so that the new proton metal wouldnt be directly competing with it on price.

Almost contemplated getting one at that price, although i think i can get an ATX50 for about $20-30 more at an LDS

Katz:
Is MR22 environmentally sealed or you have to buy environmental kit separately?

The environmental kit is separate, and its messy (silicone oil).

$295 for the Abyss is a great price (retail is ~$495). I would still get the ATX-50, however... (remember, lifetime warranty on service kits!!!)
