the only part of their line-up that has gone belly-up is their BC line.
Ironically, I actually like their BCDs. Have one myself and it's never let me down. It's sturdy and allows for excellent buoyancy with a single tank. (I use a wing from that High Springs company for twins, though, and Apeks regs for bottom and deco gas. I own nothing else from Mares but the BCD.)

Just wanted to express my surprise at the above comment, because when people complain about Mares - and plenty do, including some world-class divers I know (but in this particular case disagree with although I respect them highly) - it's almost always the regs ...

so I would say he's not playing with a full deck or at the minimum taking very unnecessary risks with his life.

I would say that he has the right to take whatever risks with HIS LIFE that HE chooses.

Lubold,

Your comment regarding me being a "nut" is something that I can honestly expect from you considering your past posts. Yes, I've read many of your responses, and have yet to see where you would be considered an expert. Being a dive shop manager certainly doesn't make one an expert in any way, shape, or form. Perhaps you should stick to the objective points rather than making slanderous remarks.

Good day....

Greg

I never said I was an expert. I actually said "my own personal experiences". I'll leave that title to you. You seem to like being called an "expert". I did not make any slanderous comments, I merely made an observation...

Good day to you ...

Me, an expert in diving? Far from it! I have never made any such remarks, and challenge anyone to show where I have. In fact, I would place the expert label on very few posters on this forum. DA Aquamaster certainly knows his stuff, and there are a number of others.

My position at Rodale's dealt only with scientific related issues and evaluating teaching materials for agencies. I still wasn't an expert by any stretch of the imagination.

I say let's make this peaceful...You do have some knowledge, but I get a bit aggravated when things get a bit nasty.

I try to follow the sage advice of "better to be thought a fool than to open my mouth and remove all doubts."

I find Gregs knowledge of regs pretty impressive. I've read posts on a couple boards, and you always explain your thoughts, not simply say, " this reg is good." You seem to have a nice working knowledge of regs that are out there. That said, I dive Apeks, but have nothing against others. I've only been able to dive a couple others, SP being one of them. It breathed great.

Well, I'm not sure which one you have... but I was referring to their new HUB system... and the other new ones with the "Airtrim" & "Airlock" mechanisms. As neat as these things are in the shop, and when they're new... they introduce way too many failure points... I think there are 6 dump valves (or is it 8?) all over the BC. Plus the little cable that tugs the automatic dump valves. Although, if it wasn't for my friends convincing me to get a BP/W rig, I probably would've ended up with a Mares Dragonfly or Zeagle Ranger, or some other back-inflate BC.

My comment was merely an observation on how Mares seems to get a lot of flak. I mean, when Apeks broke the world record, everyone was like "WOW!"... now that Mares did the same... it's a totally different reaction.

I was just kinda curious on what started this reputation. I mean, are Mares regs THAT bad? Or are they just the worst among the best brands? Or do people just feel they are over-priced for their quality?

Laser, thanks for the kind words.

I presently own a Frontier. I've dived other models, too.

Yeah, I wouldn't use a HUB myself, for many different reasons. Still, the Mares range of BCDs extends well beyond the HUB models.

Entirely true and a good point. Incidentally, I own several Apekses myself, but there are other good brands.

I'd say 'no' to all those hypotheses. I really don't have an answer myself. As you've gathered by now, I have nothing against Mares at all.
