Would you all agree that it's likely not the best time for someone like me to do a 2-3 tank boat dive for pretty much the first time in CA waters (relatively cold) on the Sand Dollar during the last weekend in July, especially if vis is an important enjoyment factor here?

Not necessarily.

Why not call the dive op and ask them where they're going that day? Whom will you be buddied up with? Why not hire a DM? Or, even better, bring along an instructor and take AOW or specialty?

I imagine if you can get a boat trip out to Catalina, or one of the other islands, you'll have a blast. The conditions should be incredible during your visit, at the end of July.

Sorry about the misinterpretation. Actually, I do host an MP4 version of one of the episodes (the introduction to the series) of my proposed cable TV Show ("Munching & Mating in the Macrocystis"). You can view it from this page. You can see the list of DVDs I have available on this page.

Now that I'm getting two beers from you as your agent, we're BOTH professionals.

(It's not so much making a living; it's whether you can deduct your expenses. )

Come on guys and gals, is it really that bad vis at your sandbox?
Im planning a dive trip to Catalina and it sounds like you have not very good summer? say it isn so? We have nice Pt. Lobos trips all summer long with about 40ft viz and 45f water :) .
on related note can my Mrs, snorkle @ Casino point?

Even if viz isn't great (10-ft or less), so what? Slow down and focus on the little things. Go hunt for nudibranches. Or float among the kelps (my favorite activity when viz isn't great).

There are tons of things to see even when viz is not optimal.

I thought I would share the fact that I saw a giant Mola Mola at casino point near the Sujac.

Looked down and at an angle and say a giant silver circle with a big fin on top. Was startled for a second and my brain processed the image, and then saw it swimming and the second fin. Crazy looking buggers.

I remember the first time i spotted one of those, It was at the end of a dive at Farnsworth bank, Glad to here they are still around the area.
