I believe the post. I've seen some dive shops that claim huge BC's are good, for example over 60 lbs of lift. I've seen and heard the bp/w's are no good and just going to kill you if you fall over face first in the water, then the stories that go along with it of how that happened just last year.

Were it me and I was closer I'd get a whole boatload of BP/W's and that way the next time we go out he'd have a stroke. Imagine, an entire boat of people who're going to kill somebody due to their gear, it's be hilarious.

For what it's worth I've been diving my DSS BP/W for quite some months now and IMO I will never dive a traditional jacket style BC again, EVER!

I don't defend my choice in gear, instead I let my skill show how well it works. However if they crossed the line and insulted "me" I'd have to show them they're wrong.

Additionally, for the 2 dives and you having to provide tanks and air I think it's a bit high in price, especially putting up with their BS. I hope your buddy was better than the Captain was.

This new permit is so controversial that I doubt there will be any "scubapolice" for a while. It's a stupid law (just like the federal gun law) that only serves to provide work to FQAS employees. It's another example of Quebec's and Canada's way to consider citizens like children, to infantilize them, to take them by the hands instead of responsabilizing them. It wont save any lives, it will just give a false sense of security. Hey, the have their FQAS card, they are safe now, nothing bad can happen now :sigh:

I remember when the law first came about...or at least I remember when PADI first wrote about it. As I recall they were busy lobbying against it. Personally I'm against governmment control of just about anything with the exception of maybe roads (but around here they're selling the roads to privat companies LOL). However, when I look at some of the dive accidents that do occure (the same stuff over and over mostly), I can't help feel that some one should do something, though, I think it's the agencies who should step up to the plate and change their ways before more governments step in and attempt to do it for them. I don't like to see governments involved but they can't possibly do any worse than what the agencies are doing. Unfortunately it just means that some divers will be forced to send money to both. If the government is going to get paid for diving certs then I think the agencies should get out of it. I tend to think there's something else that they'd be better at anyway. Maybe they could take over management of the roads or something?

i've had the above situation AND the comments on my setup both. I am SSI cert and SSI sets up the rig with two hoses on each side instead of PADI with 3 and 1. i know PADI is the biggest out there, but SSI is not "unknown," and i've had dive ops tell me my rig is set up wrong.

I didn't know there was anything but 2+2. I thought my rental gear (when I was renting) was all reg+octo on my right, SPG+LP on my left. When I bought my own, it definitely came assembled that way. Are you saying PADI advocates the SPG on the right too?

I shudder to think about what it would be like if a gov't agency (like the DMV) was responsible for certifying divers. The agency bashers (you know which agency I'm talking about) would have to redirect their energies!

Oh, well clearly you are going to die with a setup like this. :-)

Thanks. Any idea why they go with the octo on the left?

If someone wants the name of the operation, why don't you send it in a personal message? I understand the desire to not bash a company, but I believe other divers would want to know the company name so they could avoid it. That DM was irresponsible and unprofessional in his interaction with you, and was blatently ignorrant of current diving practices and equipment. I, for one, would not want to go diving with someone who treats their customers like that; especially with an attitude. What if there was a problem? Would he be able to get around his prejudices and help you? Would that other diver be able to fish his octo out of his pocket and give it to someone who needs it in time?

Dive operations are in business to provide a service to divers. Customer service should come second only to safety. That guy failed both, and is undeserving of future business.

Seriously, you're right.

If divers in or around Montreal, or foreigners planning to dive in Quebec want the name, PM me.
