I'm glad someone had actually heard of this before... i was starting to get worried i was just going to make a fool out of myself with this thread.

I've heard about this before but it seems like its something that happened a long time ago (>20years). Why was it done, why isn't it done anymore, how did it really taste? I searched around and couldn't find any other posts on it.

I've been told that South Africa has some excellent diving. A week or so there and then a day or two safari ought to make a good dive trip. Any thoughts from those who have done this?

you can burn a smaller hole by getting the cobra2 thats just coming into stores nowish. It has almost all the same features except its not a wrist unit so its cheaper (8-9 hundred).

generally I would say that tipping instructors and DMs if part of a course is not standard. This is from the point of a DiveCon, when I go on open water dives i tend to be carrying a flag, running back out of the water to get weights/fin straps/etc. I don't get paid for this but I do it because...

bummer, where do you live (i didn't see it on your profile)? i know there are some shops around my way that will run a course if its scheduled even if there's only one student.

if you have one kicking around try the oral inflater from a snorkeling vest. if you go with the camel back make sure you get the one with the manual closing valve as well because i doubt the little mouthpiece could stand up to the pressure.

personally, i'd get the VIP and with it the free fill. Something about breathing air that's over a year old doesn't appeal to me. I'm pretty sure there's a more scientific explanation but I don't want to make it up. edit: Thats quite the $.10 word!
