Does anyone have any suggestions for a particularly good fish & critter ID for New England waters?

The few dive shops I ooked in only have fish ID cards for far away tropical locations.

I'm so bad at fish ID that I'd like a text to reference so I can get a bit better.

Thanks!

Just take a picture and post it here. I think NE Lobster Divers has a 100% guess s rate depending how narced the Oceanographer is at the time.

I may suggest:

Field Book of Marine Fishes of the Atlantic Coast
By: Charles Breder
Putnam and Sons Publishing.

Its an older book but very thorough.

Who you callin' narced Scubasarus? :D

"Marine Life of the North Atlantic: Canada to New England" by Andrew Martinez is a nice non-technical reference on common local fish and inverts.

For a really really good technical reference on local fish species Bigelow and Schroeder's Fishes of the Gulf of Maine" is the best:

Those two books are nice field guides as well although not specific to our region:

Thanks for the titles!

I hate having to ask people for all the fish I see or photo, but also hate not knowing what I'm seeing at the same time.

Hopefully this can take a dent out of that :)

I saw a really great video that had film of a good number of marine critters off the coast of New England at East Coast Divers. I could never figure out how to get a copy of it though. Apparently they have the only copy of it and I had permission to get a copy of it from the filmmaker but failed at actually getting the video copied. If you're in the area I'd suggest dropping in and seeing if they'll let you watch it.
