as long as they stay away from the inland areas.. and the parking lots at the beach when I am trying to get a spot, I am Ok with them here. After all, they are the main reason we don't have a state sales tax.

We have 'em and we have a state sales tax! Not fair! Why can't they all go to Texas? Yep, the car haulers started a couple weeks ago and the 'birds flocked in. I was at Costco last week and it hadn't been that crowded since last April.....ugh. Crazy drivers, slow drivers, can't get an appt. at the Mayo, etc., etc., etc. So would be trading bad for worse if we move to Florida?

yep. West coast of Florida you get more blue hairs, and Central US visitors.. Michigan, Indiana, etc. East coast we get New York and Quebec, etc.

For the last couple of weeks, I've been watching the compendium of The Walking Dead and living The Driving Dead. At least in The Walking Dead, the zombies don't operate motor vehicles, although I guess The Driving Dead have to put in their dentures first to bite you.

I grew up in Florida, but after 25 years of living in California, recently returned for the beautiful diving.

The warm clear water diving here is awesome especially the wrecks in Keys & currents/sharks up in Jupiter,. We have easy access to caves in No Fl & it's just a quick flight to Mx! Love the tropical weather, lots of sunshine and tropical storms.

I do miss the cute seals/sea lions, invigorating cold water, kelp forests, easy access to deep shore dives and the challenges of diving the Pacific. Do not miss drygloves! Also miss the California people, mountains, deserts & having lots of open space to hike/mtn bike/climb/explore.

So you think that Florida has better diving than California? If you could settle anywhere purely for diving it would not be California but Florida? Just curious.

"Better" depends on what you like. The vis is much nicer in Fl for sure, the waves are calmer, the water is warmer, the diving is more accessible. The Pacific is more of a challenge. I like them both for different reasons.

Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

Shortly after being flipped off by a New Yorker who was upset I beeped the horn at her after she's sat still when a light went green for 15 seconds or longer, I really have to stress the snowbord/traffic aspects of Florida; and the traffic is WAY worse in Miami than it is here(Tampa/St Pete area), and this area has gotten SIGNIFICANTLY more annoying than usual just in the last two weeks.

Florida under water is great. It has everything you might want; even if it is spread out, it's not too many hours drive anywhere.
But coming here also means you will want to spend more time under water because the surface intervals suck.
The state is becoming a sprawl. Won't be long until Tampa and Orlando merge into being the worlds longest strip mall; with the same stores repeated every mile or so. If there isn't a Walgreens on every corner it's only because there is already a CVS.

To the original question; I've lived in a few places in the US, and Florida is a big step up from Louisiana. It's a step down from Georgia or Colorado, though far closer to the coast than Denver. :D

Governmentally.... don't even get me started.
Socially; well, the vast majority of Springer and Geraldo guests come from Florida for a reason; and that reason is pretty evident on a regular basis when you deal with the locals.

However, I still maintain anything north of the Florida state line is "the north". Hence residents in TX, GA, SC, TN etc.. they're all northerners if you ask me.

I will take this argument a step further; if you were born north of the EQUATOR, you are a Northerner. End of story.

All that said, I am headed back to Australia after 4 years in Florida and 14 in the U.S.
I'll be moving to the Cairns area, specifically for the diving and rainforests, and the ability to see the stars at night without having to go miles off the coast.
I will be able to upload a lot of video for you all while I'm diving the Great Barrier Reef, so don't think I'll forget you. /wicked laugh

I lived in Florida in my early youth and my grandparents and parents had homes there dating back to the mid 60s so I spent a bit of time in the state. While I have enjoyed the diving on the southeastern coast and in the Keys, I am not particularly fond of Florida itself. Intense lightning storms scare the heck out of me (I had lightning strike very close to me twice as a youth and don't want a "third strike"). The heat and humidity is no fun. The insects are another PITA. But the worst thing is that many Floridian divers seem to think the water there gets too cold to dive in winter!!!! They should try diving here (I've hit 46 F in a wetsuit during winter in the waters off Catalina).
