Hahahahahahahahahahaaha

and that's how aj got his first e/o cord :D

So, I went with the 21w/9ah HID Halcyon Explorer. Got it from wreckdiversupply.com, free shipping worldwide (I'm in China), plus the two free HP LED Scout backups. Just arrived in the mail today. I 'accidentally' got the E/O cord, by which I mean I didn't order or pay for it but it's fitted (apparently Halcyon sent it to WDS that way) so I guess I saved $195 although based on earlier posts I didn't actually want it. Still, the price was right :)

First impressions:

*The lighthead/ballast is a lot bigger than I thought it would be. I mean it's huge!

*Everything is well made as I would expect from Halcyon

*The focus adjustment seems pretty primitive - seems like it would be easy to bump and move it?

*My staff in the office here in Shanghai thought it was hilarious that I had ordered it from the US and it has Made in China stickers all over it :p

* The globe seems rather unprotected, I didn't realise there was no lense (for cooling I assume?)

* The relector surface isn't as shiny as I would have expected

Questions:

How do you pack yours for travel? Do you take the reflector off? How do you protect the slug? I found these: Dive light parts - Slug protector - ScubaSupport.nl are they worthwhile? Or shall I just leave the reflector on & put a beer holder on it which fits pretty well

Do you need to put something on your waist harness to stop the cannister sliding forward?

If you have any other tips or thoughts feel free to share

Thanks

PS On a side note, I ordered a set of wetnotes sent too as a Xmas present for a buddy; the new 'non-DIR' logo ones; not as good as my 'DIR logo' wetnotes, they've replaced the bungy cord around the middle and the page holder with loops of flat elastic which doesn't seem like it would be as durable :(

the focus shouldn't change if you bump the light if the screw is all the way tight.

extreme exposure sells slug protectors. not sure who makes them. I assume halcyon does.

you put an extra buckle on the harness to stop it from sliding.

the bungee has been moved from the spine to the edge of the notes so it can be held open when you're writing in them. it's actually kinda neat for things like survey. not sure if the elastic holds up as good as the bungee. i saw a prototype that had bungee instead but there must have been an issue with it since they switched to that elastic.

enjoy your light. it's a good one. :D

btw you'll dig that e/o later. when you end up with extra lights. you can stick a new head on there if that one fails and save a dive. or switch between different canisters. it's a good thing

Thanks LH

Looking at the EE site:

Interesting that they have an 'ultra-bright' reflector, since I mentioed the reflector seemed less shiny than I had expected... anyone used one? Ultra-bright Halcyon Reflector | Extreme Exposure

They have a 'travel lid' but the manual says not to store the battery in the can? Travel Lid 9 | Extreme Exposure

Their slug is cheaper than the one I linked so I might get one from EE instead Travel Lid 9 | Extreme Exposure

What is the function of the 'test tube'? 18/21 watt HID & Halogen Lamp Cover (test tube) | Extreme Exposure

Any opinions on this, anyone: Dive light parts - Reflectors - Protective cover for Halcyon Salvo and Aegir reflectors - ScubaSupport.nl As I mentioned earlier in the thread all of my diving involves international travel so I want to make sure I pack it safely

Re: wetnotes, the new one I got today has elastic loops on the spine AND on the edge; my wetnotes have a bungee on the edge (to hold them closed) and a velcro'd strip down the spine (to mark your page). And they both have a bungee loop off the top of the spine

The test tube is the bulb cover. Your light has one already installed. The replacement is for if you break it (its hard to break, though).

I wouldn't worry about the reflector thing. I'm 99% sure the reflector you have is the best one H makes. There was an older model with a 3 stamped into it that isn't as great. That product might be meant to replace it.

Scott, I cut it with a small scubapro knife (similar to the newest H knife, but steel instead of Ti). It was ridiculous.

The test tube is the bulb cover

Ah, ok. I didn't realise the cover came off

It seems EE have a minimum international shipping cost of USD102 :( Makes the $20 slug protector a teeny bit expensive
