If you are like me, you will not have to make many adjustments. My average surfacing GF is somewhere around 50.
It largely depends upon what your SurfGF is at the end of the bottom phase.

If you're doing NDL diving, it won't be above 100 -- the very definition of no-deco-diving. If you're diving deeper and longer it'll be well over 200, maybe over 300.

I still haven't figured out why anyone would set their conservatism to 85%, surface at 90%, and then complain when the computer says they overshot their target setting.
The issue isn't the computer complaining that you overshot their target setting. I'd expect to get a warning from my Shearwaters if I did that. The issue is the computer turning itself into a brick for 24-48 hours following such an event.

I still haven't figured out why anyone would set their conservatism to 85%, surface at 90%, and then complain when the computer says they overshot their target setting. All my random poking and prodding here failed to elicit a legible response, so yeah: I don't understand. And I don't expect I ever will.
I know I responded to this already, but I had another thought. Rephrasing your question a bit differently.

I still haven't figured out why anyone would set their conservatism to 75%, surface at 80%, and then think it's reasonable when the computer says they overshot their target setting and locks out for 24 or 48 hours. All my random poking and prodding here failed to elicit a legible response, so yeah: I don't understand. And I don't expect I ever will.

... I don't understand. And I don't expect I ever will.
Someone is using irrational over the top language to spin you up. Your passionate response is what motivates them. Nobody is stupid enough to actually believe their position (that you are bent and need to seek medical attention just because you violated NDL on a DC even if it was set to high conservativeness).

There is a name for this type of behavior on the internet, but I'm drawing a blank right now on what it is  .

As far as I’m concerned I would rather see a computer start flashing a warning every few seconds as opposed to lock out. It’s easy to not lock up a computer, usually but I have seen it happen.

Yep. I know that. Just wanted to reword his question to see if he can answer it. I doubt it.

When sharks are doing zoomies while you're on the deco line, I can totally see exiting at 75% in "violation" of a 70% setting. Or a buddy having health issues. Or maybe you really just have to take a dump.

Point is, sometimes new information arrives that may warrant a slightly less conservative plan. Let me decide if I can dive later that day -- or even tomorrow!

That's a weak argument, I think.

There's conservative and there's less conservative but still reasonably safe. Or not necessarily unsafe.

Sometimes I'll set the cruise control to 75 because that's the speed limit. But with it engaged, I may push past that to 80 for one reason or another. Say I'm passing someone and see an oncoming car top the hill and I need to finish passing and make room (for an extra margin of safety). Same-same.

For a computer to pitch a hissy and turn itself off to spite you, that is not a good solution, regardless of if you exceed your initially self-determined setting. A blasted piece of equipment should not be spiteful or punitive.

That's why (among other reasons), you might be able to gift me a Suunto computer, and I'd thank you so as to be polite, and when you are out of sight it would go in the bin and I'd SMH.

What argument? This was me adjusting the wording of another poster slightly with a different spin. I think ultimately we agree on the lockouts in general.

Agreed. Especially one that you pay for. The user conservatism settings are to provide a buffer for the user. The diver should definitely follow the guidance, however, there are situations where getting to the surface quicker than the conservative plan allows is in the best interest of the diver. Some problems are best solved on the surface. If the diver is still able to surface without symptoms a 24 or 48 hour lockout is just ridiculous.

I may sell it, but I certainly wouldn't use it.

I keep wondering why some divers are so concerned with being locked out after a decompression stop is violated for more than the maximum time allowed by their computer.

I have a few over 2250 dives since 1997, all with at least one of my computers being an Oceanic that would lock me out for 24 hours if I violated a deco stop for more than 5 minutes. Most of my dives are no stop, but about 5% are light deco, generally less that 10 min. I have never been locked out in violation gauge mode. I have also never run out of gas.

I have dived a backup computer most of the time, some Oceanic, but some other brands. There was no lockout on my Cochran EMC-14, it was a bit more liberal than DSAT. My Dive Rite Nitek Q had a 24 hour lockout. My backup has been a Shearwater Teric since 2019, obviously, no lockout.

I would find some computers too conservative for my liking, but I believe I could make any of them work.
