There are for example the "one-liner" offenders who just won't go away. If they are in context nobody finds them funny (chauvinist jokes on Womens Views for example), and have nothing to contribute but to distract and sometimes even intimidate participants and prevent discussion, just get rid of them. Many people lack tact, some people lack any self control. One does not need to do much analysis to pick up the obvious offenders. It's pretty plain to see.
That's why you should use the
report_new.gif
button!

piikki:
I find that so petty! :)
It may be petty, but why would you tolerate off-topic banter in a serious thread?

I live in constant fear of the moderators' wrath? :D

No, honestly I don't find it worthwhile to whine about everything. Creates more work for you, and often gives more attention to the offenders, and then they return with vengeance (because like I said, they lack the self-control anyway). I do not come to these boards for that, I try not to get too emotionally involved. Better to ignore.

I would think though that on some of the subforums tighter rein would be appropriate (like is already happening), and Leah raised a valid issue here. The Salvo thread IS a good example. It went to drain very early, and I think men ignoring the topic were the main culprit. (The original emphasis was brought up several times during the discussion). Considering the low traffic on Women's Views, maybe there is something wrong with this.

I know from second hand experience that if a poster is causing a ruckus they can be kicked from a thread and not allowed to view it. . .

How many men are there who choose the "decline"?

More than you think
:D

Mania
But why did you decline? Is there anything wrong with saying I'm a woman or I'm a man?
As a person who declined to state you may have problems with posting in the women views if this part of the board would closed to any other genders but females
:D
