Now for those of us who hit new posts (guilty) and don't notice the forum they are in....could the women's forum pop up the thread with a whole bunch of PINK on it???? I really think that color would be easily noticed. :)

Good point Pennypue....

Once I make the rounds I use the new posts search feature. Seeing "DIVING RELATED" in the RH column makes it easy to hop to the last post and respond. I have done so a few times noticing the actual parent forum only afterwards.

I don't know how easy color is but adding "womans" even at the cost of abbreviations would make it self evident.

well... after reading through this thread, i guess i walk away with the following ...

the issue is really "What should the WOman's Forum be?"

1. a forum where all members can discuss women's issues ; or

2. a forum where women can discuss women's isssues.

i can see pluses and cons as to either approach, but i guess we need to figure out wihch it is

the answer to the OP's question depends on the answer to the above question

I like the idea of 'opting in', those that wish to enter could do so. I also think that making the font a different color is good too. There are some "voices" on the 'board that tend to run over others and I am sure that there are some people that would rather post in a forum where they feel they can get an answer from similar divers whether it be women, men, DIR, solo, or photographers.

I personally have no problem with men or women posting in a woman's forum. I think that it would be nice if they were made aware of the fact.

You can't have it both ways, always wanting equality and then setting ourselves apart like a different species.

I'm surprised that you don't think that we can have equality yet still celebrate our differences. I guess that I just see equality as being valued equally not as being the same.

Well
I still think that many women - mainly new SBoarders - would not ask "can I dive during menstruation" in general forum.

And even if I think this is a stupid question - still I think we need a place they can ask this question more freely. In Women Views they would be more willing to do so.

You may think this is a stupid question, but because it has been asked by women obviously there is some concern.

I think that you just gave a great reason to keep a woman's forum and to make it opt-in. A woman that isn't comfortable in asking this question in the main forum could do so without input from those that may belittle her for asking it.

Brilliant! If ever I need a lawyer, Andy I hope you will take my case!

Right now, I don’t think the forum fits either of those scenarios. People often respond without ever knowing they are in the women’s forum. They see a topic title they like, fire a shotgun answer and move on.

I think having a better idea of what forum you are posting in the in first place would go a long way to solve the issue. Having some idea of the perspective of the forum and perhaps the angle from which a person asks a question might help to provide better answers to the questions. I think that would not only be true for the women’s views forum, but also other places like solo, dir, photo, etc and maybe one day a monkey diving forum.

I have in my short time here on the board seen more than one poor fellow get flamed by posting in a thread without knowing where he was treading.

OK OK OK So does this thread mean that if I am not a solo diver I can't post in the solo diver or DIR or Conch or some other forum like that?

It means your posts should be on topic with the forum in which you are posting and relevant to the question asked in the thread--really any thread on the board. You should not go to the solo forum and write about the benefits of buddy or DIR diving not the place for it. Same with DIR, not the place to talk about solo diving.

Someone specifically in the other thread asked what women thought about something and you get many pages of men blasting women for their view of the ad. It is one reasons I started this thread and why I also find the women's forum useless and don't post or read here for the most part. A woman asks a question of women and then the men take over no matter the topic--although they did stay out of the nail polish thread except for one post and it had some merrit to the topic.

Leah just Chill for a minute. How about if we have a Men s View forum just like the Womens View forum. I am sure the Men would like it plus Women can post there too just like we guys do here it s no big deal. BTW i do agree with some of the things you have said so far.
