I recently got this great set off of craigslist. I can't wait to take it out diving in La Jolla cove down here. Its a great place.
I'd like to order spare parts and an annual kit for it in advance.

It has no model number but I think it might be an Oasis by Sherwood. But it was paired with a Sherwood Ultima 2nd stage, which is basically identical to a Jetsream.

This leads me to think this 1st stage might be a much better model. What are your thoughts on this matter?

Is there any notable things I should know about it?

I don't know for sure which model it is. However, I always thought that Sherwood first-stages were all pretty much the same--dry air-bleed diaphragm designs (maybe the lowest model--the Brut--is unbalanced and higher model ones balanced, but even this I am unsure of). I had thought the main differences were to be found in their second stages. But it will be interesting to hear from someone who knows.

Correct - only brut is unbalanced, the rest differs only with number of LP&HP ports, and highest model (Maximus) has different finishing - it's not shiny as the others. Main difference is in construction of the 2nd stage. This one on the photo is shiny :), but which model exactly...

It looks just like the 1st stage that I bought used about a year and a half ago - It came with a Sherwood Oasis+ second stage. I've had it serviced twice now (once when I bought it and again a year later), and the setup has worked fine for me. Somewhere around here I had the PDF manuals for the Sherwoods. You can find them through google - they describe all of the first/second stages they make.

My guess is that it was from the mid-eighties. The easiest way to tell is to pop it open and have a look inside. The early models had the bleed orifice (flow restrictor) integral with the piston, and the IP was adjusted with shims under the main spring. The late 80's-early nineties model (3000 series, Oasis+ etc.) had a system whereby IP was adjusted by turning the cap, and locking it with a set screw. The newer models (late nineties to present, (5000 and 8000, I believe) have gone back to shims to adjust the IP, but have moved the flow restrictor to the body, where it can be easily replaced without replacing the piston.

There was really none "better" than the Oasis first stage. All first stages in a series except the Brut were (other than cosmetics) the same. The Brut was essentially the same first stage, except that it did not have the set of Bellville washers on a movable orifice, which is Sherwood's version of balancing.

Are you sure you are diving La Jolla , or is it diving E-BAY.
This reg is for sale on E-bay.
Why not come here and tell the truth ?
If you want information on a reg thats fine, just don't make up a story.
