I'm not being defensive at all. I could care less what you think...
Wait! I take it back!! DIR divers do have a sense of humor!!
If you didn't care what I think then you wouldn't be all fired up over nothing.
I think what aggravates you and your compatriots is when other folks let you know that they don't care what you think and don't buy into the DIR philosophy 100% If you want the rest of the diving community to stop discounting you then ya'll need to settle down and stop being so defensive anytime someone makes a little joke.
I feel that quote provides proper credit, where credit is due. Do you? I have never read anything from the "DIR leadership" that would suggest otherwise. Could you provide that information?
Try rereading my post. I agreed that it was one of the few instances I've seen credit given. I think I even thanked you for it.
As coldsmoke/Hunter pointed out, DIR goes beyond just gear configuration. Many people focus on gear, but in all reality, that's not wear the strengths of where DIR lie.
Huh? What? Is that more DIR double speak or just poor grammar? :shocked2:
It's more of a philosophy of team work, situational awareness, standardized protocols (but not to a point were people are mindless drones as some people would have you believe), and learning to analyze, think, and react as things happen. You could take the gear completely out of the loop and still achieve that.
...and yet the DIR forum focuses almost 100% on gear. Funny isn't it? Teamwork is so darned important yet it is hardly ever discussed in your own forum.
I hate to break it to you but there are plenty of other divers who do exactly what you referred to above and guess what? They are not DIR. You boys don't have a corner on that market. Ya'll just like to tell us you do. You see a couple of rec divers making a bad choice and think, "Poor, stupid, untrained divers...if only they had been DIR trained they would live longer." You don't find a whole lot of foolishness in the tech diving community regardless of their training agency. Those folks don't hang around long. The saying may be cliche, but it got to be that way for a reason..."There are old divers and bold divers, but no old, bold divers." DIR or otherwise.
A team of CCR divers out of San Diego have asked Andrew Georgitis to provide them with a "intro to tech" class that will allow them to better incorprorate the UTD/DIR philosophy into their diving. These guys are currently doing 300fsw dives off the coast pretty regularly.
Oh my, a GUE instructor teaching folks on CCR? That's not DIR! They're gonna die!!!!! :shocked2:
300' may seem deep to a DIR diver, but it's not. There are plenty of people who regularly dive beyond 300'. Come up with a better example. That might impress a few recreational divers, but not me. Besides, Georgitis sounds like a sexually transmitted disease.
