the ring goes on after, you aren't supposed to put the ring on then push it through. You need circlip/snap ring pliers, promise. There's no other way to open those things up without sending them across the room, especially in that location.
computer boot sits on the stud, snap ring gets put on afterwards

Put the boot in some almost boiling water to soften it up. It should become flexible enough to snap it back over the nub. Then have at it with the circlip pliers.

Getting the computer back in Isnt the rough part. That ring will not fit through the tiny hole in the bottom of the boot to reattach it to the compass part
