I had the viper america and octopus..... I had the EXACT same issues. I find that the Octopus is pretty damn good, but the primary just isn;t up to snuff. When I got rid of it, and got a Scuba pro, I kept the octo.
The shop I bought the new reg at said they had 3 other customers who said the viper primary gave them issues, but they loved the octo.... No clue as to WHY this might be, but your story seems to be coroborated.
