Those H inflators sure seem like crap. Problems upon problems with them.

You could replace it with a regular inflator...but it sounds like you dig your current solution.

My shears in an OMS pouch threaded on my waist belt hold my long hose loop. Seems functionally like a can light for that purpose (I don't now and probably never will have a can light).

Catherine, why do people tell you to switch to zip ties?

They're these little rubber...pegs, I guess. They hold the wing on the plate and make it very easy to swap a wing on and off. Like less than a minute with no tools.

They basically hold the wing in place while you get the tank cinched to the plate, thus pinning the wing down completely.

They work great and hold the wing well unless you lift the rig by the wing. Then the weight of the plate can cause it to pull free of the wing. It pretty much stays attached because of the tank straps, but you should handle it with the shoulder straps to avoid that.

Excellent Discription of the rubber pull tabs. Here's a tip; When changing tanks grasp the harness with one hand near the top of one shoulder strap, but reach over the top of the wing with your thumb. You can pinch the top of the wing against the plate to keep the top pull tab from poping out of the hole. This leaves your otherhand free to deal with the camstraps.

Tobin

Not sure if it is correct but my little tiny knife holds the longhose loop.
If you aren't using a can light - then it's fine.

Greg, the bolts seem to loosen and fall off and I ordered a bag of them. the tech divers I know love zip ties for everything. yea, i guess i should get the inflator fixed. do you think there is anythingreally dangerous about just blowing in it? I don't have to do it but maybe once. Since I am not in drysuit, not wearing alot of weight, I cannot think of a downside. Am i missing something? If I need it on the surface i just plug it up and inflate it.

Thanks, Tobin. I have the carrying technique down pat. It's the DMs who don't seem to get it :)

I just made this modification last weekend, and I LOVE IT!

History:
I've been wearing a 4 pound weight belt while lobstering in a wetsuit with the DSS 6-pound backplate, and an hp100 PST single tank.

I wear an 8-pound weight belt when I do "real" dives, wearing my beloved drysuit.

Looking to simplify, I threaded a 2-pound hard-weight onto each of the the back loops of the harness where it passes through the lowest slots in the backplate. I used keepers to prevent the weights from moving. Each weight is snug against the backplate, and does not interfere at all with the inflation of the wing.

Now, I don't need a weight belt when lobstering in a wetsuit (shallow, single-tank,) and wear only a 4-pound belt with my drysuit. The weight distribution feels perfect while diving, and my COG is very comfortable.

The lighter weight belt is more comfortable, and the rig is still easy to handle even with the 4 additional pounds added to it.

The DSS rig is a thing of beauty to dive. Can't say enough good things about it.
And I love the rubber thingamabobs... very elegant, simple, and effective. Tobin, you are a wizard!

On a boat, nobody moves my rig but me.... grrrrrrrr!

hmm. that sounds good actually. Nice profile pic!

I have a pair of the DSS 5 lb weight plates for my DSS backplate, it almost perfectly offsets the buoyancy differences between a steel HP100 and an AL80. I take the plates off for coldwater HP100 dives and put the plates back on for coldwater AL80 dives.

Mr. Mo2vation shot that one at Cat Rock, backside of Anacapa Island, December, 55fsw, clear water and wicked current up above. Great dive, rockin' photo! Wonderful BP/W!
