We take the bag drag any day over a layover (in the States). Coming from Canada it adds waaaaay too much time at the airport in Toronto to preclear US customs and, once you add this to the actual layover time, it's faster and usually much cheaper to fly in and out of CUN.
That's different for you guys; you probably have to retrieve and recheck your luggage in the US and go back through security, don't you? If not and it's only the time that's involved, I'd still pick the layover instead of having to schlep myself and all my equipaje from airport to cab to boat to cab to hotel.

When I go to Cozumel it's usually for a couple of weeks, so I'm not in a hurry; a couple of extra hours between flights in a layover is no big deal. But of course DSFDF and YMMV.

You are joking, I hope. No matter how much we gringos may disagree with what is being done on, around, or to Cozumel, it is not within our rights to take direct action against anyone or any place of business there.
There are 2 kinds of gringo, my friend. There is one who goes scuba diving, and one who goes on cruise ships. Guess who's money are bigger?

That, I just can't see... It's at least between 3 to 4 hours to get from Cancun to Cozumel doing the bag drag when. you take into consideration getting a ride to playa, the ride to playa, hitting ferry tickets, security, the ride there, getting off, finding a ride to final destination in cozumel.

I wish governments would look at the impact of cruise ships have had in various ports of call. Venice and Santorini come to mind.

Anything after getting off the ferry is much faster than being at the airport. Most of the layovers are around 2+ hours (and often longer). We are usually around 3 hours from CUN to CZM. Having to clear an extra set of immigration adds at least an extra hour or longer. After you factor the massive cost delta to fly into CZM vs CUN, it's usually a no brainer to bag drag for us Canucks. We also far prefer the ferry to sitting at an airport waiting for the next flight.

It was much quicker on my arrival when I did the bag drag in Feb. I walked out the door, got the bus ticket and was on my way within 15 minutes. No traffic on the way down to PdC, 10 minute walk to the pier and another 15 minute wait for the ferry. I was at the dive shop to check in 2 hours after leaving the Cancun terminal.

It did take close to 4 hours to get back though. I didn't buy the bus ticket in advance and the first one was filled and then there was construction on the road which caused major traffic.

The price difference on the flights was enough to cover my room for the week. I can put up with a little inconvenience for that.

Also, I just checked Google Flight. If you want to go in June, there are no nonstops from Chicago to Coz and the shortest layover is over 6 hours!

The drive from Cun to Playa is 50 minutes best case and the ferry ride is 45 minutes standard, add customs min 20 min, baggage claim min 30 min, getting your ride and buying ferry tickets min 20 min, 2 hrs doesnt seem possible.

WRT to chicago to Czm - need an overnight there so i hit a few blues bars on Halsted St 1st!

It isn't the time that it takes that makes a difference to me, though connecting in Houston from Austin on United the time is about the same as it would be if I could fly direct nonstop to CUN from AUS and bag drag to CZM. I might do the bag drag if I were traveling light and the cost difference was hundreds of US$, but I am never traveling light to Cozumel. Schlepping all our luggage from Cancun to Cozumel is a deal breaker for me, just as is hauling it all to Diego's from the CZM airport just to avoid the shuttle. I don't mind paying a bit more for air fare to fly into Cozumel instead of Cancun and I don't mind riding the shuttle.

DSFDF and YMMV.

It was 2 hours starting when I walked out of the terminal. Not from when I landed.

I am sold on the bag drag. Fly direct to CUN, walk out to the ADO. Watch a movie dubbed in spanish. 10 minutes walk with my backpack from the ADO station picking up a Torta on the way to the ferry terminal. Now with the Xcaret ferry, the wait is always short. Listen to the same two guys performing the same 5 songs on the upper deck of the ultramar and in CZM in about 3 hours. The street food in Playa is much better then the airport food anywhere and I would rather be outside in mexico then in houston or miami airport.
