    Lights and sea creatures

Probally nothing to really worry about, but should watch out for photosensitive marine animals, ie jellyfish. While doing an experiment which involved submerging a light trap just below the surface for 30mins, we ended up with approx 800 individual jellyfish similar to those in the link below...

    Can't take a dump...

I get the same prob sometimes with my cressi bc. I usually find where the rear dump valve is, go vertical (directly up) since the plastic thing floats, then things are all good :)

Need some opinions on Mares please

Definatly happy with my mares gear. Only own a Nikos 1st and 2nd stage, definatly good value. Great customer service/warranty replacement too. I had a flooded depth gauge that had seen very little use. Took it to my lds to see if anything can be done by it and by chance the mares...

How do you carry your lead

12lbs in rear trim pockets, 12lbs on belt, formerly intergrated but the weight system pockets went missing. Wasn't happy I lost the pockets (and weights) but actually find it more comfortable to have weights set up this way.

    Hydrothermal Vents

High temps can be an issue, as well as the hydrogen sulfide gas they pump out isn't very user friendly. If it were possible, a hydrothermal vent doesn't really interest me as a dive site.

    Dolphin encounter

Have had 1 dolphin encounter of sorts. Was doing a surface swim back to a boat in choppy conditions. Was on my back and saw a fin stick out around 20m away. Couldn't tell if it was a dolphin or shark, but a few seconds later I saw a some fins bunched together. Couldn't see them underwater...

    Conservation Programs & Diving

I'm involved in a P. australis revegetation projet through my uni. It could be worthwhile seeing what volunteer projects are done through your local universities. Even if you aren't a student the may be willing to take you on board :)

    Fin

Oceanic Vortec V12's. Upgraded from my Mares Plana LX over xmas. Def prefer the splits, even in a nasty current they still do their job.

Integrated Weight Belt vs. Regular Weight Belt

A combination of both, since I my weight pockets are MIA, presumed picked up and taken by someone. Since they cost $AU50 each to replace, im back to the old weightbelt, but have 12lbs in my bc back trim pockets. I find having the weightbelt and integrated combinaton works well.

    Are you a marine biologist?

I'm a second year marine science student, going back to study in 3 days. The issue you stated was a the reason why I originally didn't choose to do marine sci/bio and according to some teaching staff at the uni I attend, employment prospects for a marine sci/bio degree on it's on is pretty bad...

What did you buy that you regret?

    1. My Snorkel - Used on one dive, after a 200m surface swim told myself never again will I bring a snorkel again. Couldn't stash it on my oversize bcd pockets, couldnt convieniently let it sink to the bottom since it floats. 2. Mares Mission Compass. Should of saved some $$$ and got myself an...

    Tank Protection?

I just keep mine on if only to keep the bling metallic bule finish nice and shiny :D But then again, I didn't buy the tank protector or tank, since my first scuba setup was a gift from my parents.. Edit: Haven't had experiences with it slipping. Currently have 2 tank straps on bc, plus I...

    28° is hot or cold?

I'd say a 5mm on it's own would probally be more than adequete. All my diving so far has been done with surface temps ~20 centigrade and my 5mm hasn't failed me yet. Personally i'd say a 7mm would be overkill, though i've never tried one before.
