    Sri Lankan Bad guys

Hey out there, I've got a house in Colombo, and will be there next month. For all the years I've either lived/worked there, I've never had time for diving there. Post-tsunami, what are reputable places for diving? I'm a DM, so I don't need courses (fortunately, according to the posts about...

Need your advice regarding DM course...

Last year, when on a Pro Dive boat trip in Cairns, Oz, I got paired with an instructor for all but 1 of the 11 dives. The last one, he wasn't allowed to go on, because he had exceeeded the allowed max depth of the previous one by 1 meter. Anyway, I got an OW guy with 15 dives. I actually...

    Need Advice Plz!!!

Definitely complain! Sorry for the incomprehension, but how is it that people have to even ask the question, of if cr***y service is standard, whether PADI or NAUI...If I were paying the money people pay for OW, and got **** for service, believe me, I'd have something to say about it, and not...

    Rules for Non-Military Personnel

I remember the childish insult growing up, "Yer momma wore combat boots." I used to tell other kids proudly, yes, my momma DID wear combat boots! She had her parents sign their consent, back in WW2, when it was less common for women to be in the military. My parents met at a USO club in West...

    Continuing Education... Your thoughts?

Yes, this is a good topic. Experience does not mean necessarily taking more courses. Courses like the AOW, as was stated above, give you the chance to show your skill to an instructor. To me, experience is best gained by diving. After my first 10 dives, I was lucky to find a friend who was...

    Exposure suit colours!!!

Yo ho ho. Who says black is old school? I prefer black. My wetsuit and mask are black. My split fins are black with yellow. You don't have to wear day-glo to be different. I do use a strip of reflective orange on my snorkel, and my tank was of a rare make, so it wasn't hard to notice me...

why steel tanks? (and other steel tank questions)

Now that I've been going thru a few tank threads here, I wonder...I just love Poseidon HP steel tanks. However, since the ones I used in Saudi lacked the D.O.T. Royal stamp of approval, I sold them. Has anyone seen Poseidon HP steel tanks made for use in the U.S.? I don't imaging they would...

    Steel Tanks in the USA

:blahblah: Yeah, those 3 nasty little letters, D.O.T. I was using Poseidon 300 Bard tanks in Saudi, 8 and 10L tanks. Lovely, especially the 8L ones. Recognized and respected brand throughout the world-minus th U.S., naturally. As if it would be so hard to get one's tanks inspected and...

    weighting "ball park" figure

As a DM, I of course follow the regs when helping out instructors with OW students. After all is said and done, though, here's what I did (still do when changing tanks, BC's...lose/gain weight) to tweak my bouyancy: I'd carry some of my weights in the BC pockets. At the end of a dive, at 5m...

Abandoned at Sea - Sun June 26, 2005 - The Ibis, Dania Beach, Hollywood Fl.

Anyone subscribed to Undercurrents? Great publication for divers, and particularly in this case. Putting a review of this dive outfit will reach many more divers than just Scubaboard. Word gets out, and bad word of mouth will put the screws to any disreputable outfit like that. Give 'er a try.

    Help naked diving

Finally, someone stating the naked truth! Talk about a case of the danglies!!!!!

The dive I went ahead with that I'd rather not talk about

Let's not worry about thread semantics. Let's just be thankful he's o.k., and will have learned from it. Anyway, sounds like a "Near misses and lessons learned" to me.

    Back again...

Hi to all. I've been out of the loop for a while. I'm back in Vermont now, after finishing up my work in Saudi Arabia. I had fallen off the fitness wagon for a while. I had been able to wear size L instead of XL, but L started getting a bit tight again. From a low of 88 kg, I was up again...

    Exercises for aching back?

I found that my lower back was hurting more when my weight was above 94 kg. I have two discs that don't leak the spongy stuff, but get a bulge out one side if I do something to pull one side. Below that weight, it happens much, much less often. I teach, so much of my day is standing up, but...

Arm sore when putting on BCD

Hi there, Some months ago, my left arm started hurting whenever I would go to put on my BCD. Same when putting on a backpack. Vertical lifting not a problem, but feels like bicep. I don't remember doing anything to hurt it, but of course I must have. It's not debilitating, and I can still...

Ways to freak out a new dive buddy onboard

Take some plastic zip ties and tell him that darned Moray won't bite THIS time. - - - - But seriously...I just take a foil-packed juice drink and a banana down on a dive, and proceed to have a snack. Banana's a bit salty, but gets a reaction!

Fitness Challenge - anyone still doing it?

I had fallen off the wagon of checking and watching everything I ate. Doing better now, back in the gym. Had gone from 89kg to 96, but back to 94kg again. I'm back to watching what I eat (cutting refined sugar mostly), lifting weights and doing cardio exercise. I found that taking a CD...

    Free-flowing Regulator

Having this skill is like having insurance. Most people don't need it, but some do. If something happens, then you're covered. If not, you're screwed. This instructor's employer needs to be told.
