Back in April, Windows 10 released an update called the Creator’s Update which focused on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). BLE is the protocol that the Perdix and Perdix AI use to communicate with Shearwater Desktop. Ever since the update, numerous BLE issues have been reported and subsequently confirmed by Microsoft. These issues have affected our users and their ability to connect to Shearwater Desktop.

Our software team has found a resolution and are currently working on a patch for Shearwater Desktop that will restore connectivity for all affected users. We expect this release will be available early July.

I hope that my response is appropriate in this thread.

First, does this (above) in any way affect my beloved Petrel 2?

Second, Shearwater Research has been proven over time to be both innovative and responsive to its customer base. As I age (67 now) I dive more and more locally. I'm starting to get overly annoyed with trying to keep my GPS (see attached pic) dry. Have you considered adding a quality GPS logging function to a future product? Yes, it would only work on the surface.

It is a shame the the dive industry doesn't get together and come up with a standard Bluetooth and USB software interface module for downloading data. Sure the data format will vary but at least one company can be responsible for keeping that piece of the puzzle working for all the different computing platforms.

Petrel 2 uses Smart Ready bluetooth as opposed to BLE so this update should not have caused problems downloading logs or updating firmware on Petrel 2 units. GPS is not a feature we have considered adding. It might be something we consider if we get enough requests for it.

so this update should not have caused problems downloading logs

Well, when Win10 was still in beta infrared worked like it had for a long long time. When they released the finished version Microsoft removed infrared connectivity which affected a whole bunch of products. They denied there was any problem at all for months :nyah: and it was almost a year before they fixed it.

Creator's Update is KNOWN to be buggy. Many reputable Win10 tech sites recommend NOT updating until at least the first major patch sometime this fall, then....maybe.

They all want to be different so that you are forced into sticking with one supplier. Consumer outrage prompted a common connector for cell phones (the only exception is iPhone). It can be done.

How about a stand-alone, blue-tooth linked second unit that is good to 300' ? Nothing new but the package and integration...

That is basically what libdivecomputer is. Subsurface (free, fantastic, open source software for dive logging and planning) uses libdivecomputer (an open source software interface module) for downloading dive data from just about any computer - the only major exception I know of is the Perdix AI, which, as I understand it, it being worked on now, but would have been done long since if Shearwater had actually tried to really help the developers that are working on it. I am a professional developer myself and am setup to do development work on Subsurface. I emailed Shearwater myself, shortly after getting a Perdix AI and finding out that it's not supported by Subsurface (or on Windows 7), and asked for info on the BTLE interface protocol they use, so I could possibly implement the support myself. I didn't even get a reply. The guys that are working on it now told me that they had asked back then as well and, as of then, had gotten no info, either.

Just got back from a trip and discovered this bug while trying to download to my PC. Eagerly awaiting a fix...anyone found a workaround?

I have all the dives uploaded to my phone and Shearwater Cloud...is there an app on my PC that could connect to the Cloud to pull stuff over?
