Seems if you visit the islands enough (and, by no means should this conversation be restricted to Coz), everyone has a "moped incident" story, or knows of someone involved in one. I had a friend with a wipeout in Negril (skinned knee/thigh/ego), and another, with a "pilot in training" airborne incident in Grand Cayman. :shakehead: The latter had his moped ignite, and though he was wearing a helmet, still wound up looking like the losing end of a UFC bout. Regardless of the outcome, it's always gonna cost ya...

Smoking can't cause instant death or massive bodily injury.....also smoking can't cause the concrete to smash your face or make a car decide to use you as a hood ornament

Hey guys don't jaywalk in Cozumel ok you might die

So how many have witnessed a Non-American (read that as someone from the US, or any gringo for that matter) die on a scooter in Cozumel? Last time I was in Cozumel there were far more Mexicans than Yankees on scooters.

It has been this way since 1992 for sure.

On my very first trip to Cozumel in 1992 a diver at the resort was busted up real bad while riding a rented scooter. I wonder what the total is since then.

and.. I can't remember if there was even a single taxi on the island back then.

I've ridden motorcycles all my life in very congested areas but never had the desire to rent a scooter in Cozumel.

I'd rather take my chances underwater !!

Why does common sense go out the window for so many people just as soon as the vacation starts ?
What? You don't know about the invisible bubble wrap vacationers are wearing? It goes on as you exit the airplane or disembark from the cruise ship. Add a few cold beers or margaritas and that's just extra insurance that nothing bad can possibly happen to you. :D

I guess I just want to see some more fun threads on Cozumel. :)

Then please start one :)

The link is an entirely different story: A woman who died while diving.
It did go to the scooter story but links fail which is why I quoted it as allowed under Fair-Use exceptions to international copyright laws for safety discussions. Tried to fix it but now it's a url that doesn't link. Try this: Google Translate

The carefree vacation mentality - which should not apply to anything with safety in mind, i.e. diving, traffic, hotels, hehe the list goes on and on.

International lawyer or stayed at Holiday Inn Express last night?

I'd never do it. I saw a guy get creamed in Roatan in March on a scooter. This subject just came up in another coz thread a week or so ago. One of the guys who responded in that thread has life changing health issues because of his Coz scooter adventure, and if I recall correctly he was an experienced rider.

You can add me to the list of experienced motorcyclists (I've ridden the same Kawasaki KZ-1100 Spectre for years) who would not ride the scooters. Their balance is different. Their suspensions suck. The helmets are a joke. The roads are terrible. The other drivers seem to see scooters as sort of an on-road Whack-A-Mole. Rent a Jeep instead. Open air, but with at least a rudimentary rollbar, seatbelts, and far better suited to the roads.

As far as common sense going away on vacation... after 30-some years in EMS and the ER, I'll just say that common sense isn't.
