An Egyptian tourist boat has sunk in the Red Sea off Jabal Al-Zeit, north of Hurghada, with six crew members on board.

According to local reports, the boat was travelling from ‘Rashid’ – presumably Port Rashid, east of the city of Alexandria on Egypt’s Mediterranean coast – where it had been undergoing maintenance.

Initial reports say the vessel capsized in rough weather on Thursday afternoon.

Four crew members were rescued quickly by search and rescue teams from the Gulf of Suez Petroleum Company (Gapco), after a distress signal was received by Red Sea Governorate authorities.

The remaining two members of the crew were recovered after search and rescue operations continued

Reports have named the vessel as ‘Tri Ton‘, however, there is no indication as to whether or not the vessel is a dive boat or liveaboard, and – at the time of publishing – Internet searching has turned up no results for dive boats operating under this particular name.

The sinking comes on the same day that the UK Government issued a safety warning over Egyptian dive boats following the Sea Story disaster, and marks the eighth ‘tourist boat’ to be lost in just two years.

I am not a naval architect nor a marine engineer but look at this video of the construction:

Namely look at the hull @0:19, there ain't much below the waterline for ballast.

That's great for you! The boat was named 'Tri Ton' or 'Try Tone' and even at one point 'Try Zone' in the Egyptian source media. I couldn't find a 'Tri Ton' and - while one might assume that was a mistranslation of 'Triton' - I (the author of the article) couldn't publish that without confirmation.

However, now I've seen a video of the capsized boat, I have since updated the copy (with links).

And yes - having watched the footage of the boat in dry dock it looks like a flat-bottomed barge...

Cheers,

C.

The Triton was on its way to Hurghada to finish being built, my sources tell me. It wasn't completed. It hadn't even gone through the usual inspections for liveaboards. The weather in Hurghada was pretty **** with high winds and big waves too, so normal boats weren't meant to be going out altogether, Triton supposedly was only out because it was being transferred. During which it capsized.

If you have some info please PM me. I haven't been able to determine if it's brand new or an existing boat that went to Rashid for a repair/refit...

You are still around here on SB? Good to see you here 🙂

Thanks for the update. BTW in the video the winch is not supporting the boat. The hook is swinging freely. They might have been trying to lower the hook to assist the two crew members in the water swimming.
