"Pragmatic" meaning that you have to trash a new company that fell behind its estimated roll-out? Have you had a deposit down on this and are frustrated? Have you had to stop diving because you are waiting for this particular computer? Then at least the tone of some of these posts might be understandable.
I, for one, am not a desperate early adopter and am willing to let X-Deep have their chance on whether the device is actually a good one or not. That will come soon enough. Dive computer companies are small enterprises, and elite computer makers smaller still. It would not take much to put any one of them out of business, just look at UEMIS, who had probably the best rec computer made up to that point but still went out of business. That X-Deep is still going forward, and apparently increasing manufacturing capacity, and also made what seem to be significant improvments to their product in the interim before the launch, is all to their credit. Their overly optimistic promises as to timing not so much, but, really, how can anyone say that is a predictor of quality, or even customer service? Have actual owners of X-deep products complained about quality and customer service?
The X-Deep looks promising. The compass in particular, and the ascent rate display, look outstanding and could turn out to be the best going right now. We won't know how their computer mode stacks up until we see the display configuration, and until it has been used more widely by divers. Their price point is excellent, as is their strategy for gradual upgrades to keep cost under control.
I am considering a computer upgrade next year and this will be on my short list if it works as expected, along with the petrel, the lynx, and, yes, even the venerable Galileo Sol.
