My DSMB is in a butt pocket, not big enough for the SMB and a finger spool. So I connect them when I need them. not much of an effort.

Try doing it with dry gloves.

Fortunately, I do not have to :). Try it in warm water sometime, a piece of cake.

If I am wearing thick glove I would use reel than finger spool.
Two different devices.
Need a really big pocket for reel + smb.

Nah, it is harder for sure, but you get used to it.

OTOH, try blowing the SMB in 4C/38F water when your lips are numb. You need tricks for that, like blowing it from the corner of your mouth, instead of the middle (where as much air blows around the SMB mouthpiece instead of into it). :D

Yes, outside of a course.

I dive mainly cold water and use dry gloves. Training for my solo course I did both the assemble and preassembled methods with a finger spool. It is very challenging with dry gloves (or thick wet gloves) and I have found most if not all those I know locally have their's preassembled and my instructor approves of that method. On our course and after, we carried a reel as well on all dives so the option is there but the finger spool is dedicated for the DSMB. If I was always in warm water without gloves it would be easier to assemble but if I NEED to deploy it maybe that's time better used for another task....

Try doing it with dry gloves.
Not an issue really.
Dive with Showa 720 gloves and thick undergloves, can still put my SMB and reel together in a hassle.
I definitely prefer having it pre assembled though as that just makes things easier, but don't see how dry gloves would ruin that.
Practice makes perfect.
