Why not attach spool to DSMB before the dive?

Pre-attached.

I was trained before carrying DSMBs was a thing, so I watched all the same videos when I decided to carry one. I sort of assumed the cave divers who were doing those videos kept them separate just because they normally keep spools free for cave stuff.

Cave divers carry DSMB?

@Brilig :

You probably saw some of the DSMB deployment videos from GUE Fundamentals in-water demonstrations. This is strictly done in class. I suspect this is done to develop some mid-water command while working on a specific task. Outside of Fundamentals, I have never seen anyone carry an unattached DSMB.

I would not recommend carrying an unattached DSMB. You really don't want to mess with that at the end of the dive, when you might be tired or cold with reduced dexterity in your extremities.

I don’t think the average non-GUE trained diver understands it’s a training exercise though. It seems to be presented in the videos as how it’s done, keeping the spool and DSMB separate in pockets.

Nobody mentions in the videos that this is a very good training exercise, but in open water, you have the DSMB and spool attached in your pocket. If you’re not GUE trained, and are just looking at the videos, you’d miss this.

Remember when they were a " Safety sausage", we now have acronyms for every thing, SMD, DSMB or WTFSS.:D
They work though.

I'm a GUE diver, and I keep mine attached all the time. If there is a circumstance where I might need a spool I just carry a separate spool in my pocket (or even a separate SMB), most of my wreckdiving buddies (GUE or not) do it like this.

Yes in instruction video's you'll see the deployment of the SMB done with spool and smb detached, but this is more a workload thing (getting students to have additional workload while keeping a steady platform and buoyancy). There might be reasons, but I don't know them or have forgotten them.

Most divers would not have any pocket to stow anything.

I carry two reels
A 15 and a 35 meter
both with double enders

the 15 is attached by default to the spool

today for example
I decided I preferred to deploy my DSMB from 28 meters

I reached for my butt pocket - deatched it
in one of the zipper compartments is the 15 meter spool attached to the DSMB

I disconnected the 15 meter spool. clipped it to my waist D ring

attached the 35 meter spool and deployed it.

attached butt pocket to my waist D ring
