If you're clipping one off your butt D-ring, why not just clip them both off.

Permanently attach the dSMB to your spool (if you really don't want to do that underwater), feed a loop of line through one of the holes of the spool. Clip your double-ender onto that loop, wrap the line around the trigger, and back through the gate so it won't come undone. Then clip the entire assembly to your butt D-ring.

For deployment, unclip from your butt D-ring. Unclip from the loop. Clip the double-ender to your shoulder D-ring. Inflate the dSMB and let it go. Use the double-ender to loop the line back onto the spool as you ascend, and clip it to the spool during a deco or safety stop to prevent dropping the spool.

I just like girth hitching my line to my SMB. It keeps things really simple and leaves my boltsnap free to use as a tool to reel in the line
