Why doesn't the USA adopt officially the metric unit?

I used metric a lot during the 5 years I lived in turkey. the part I never really grabbed was dealing with land, ie hectares & such. But then acres always made so much sense, too

I can't even imagine what the cost would total for us to change it all over. All product labeling, road signs (every mile marker in America?), every text books, encyclopedia, reference manual, etc. Gas pumps seem like they'd be a big deal but as all the newer ones use an LCD or LED display and are programmable, maybe not so much.

And then there will be the decades of slowly losing the need for both. Vehicles, for example, domestics use SAE. So tools and many replacement parts, manuals & such will have to deal with pre-change.

Yep, sounds like a ton of fun to me.

In the real world metric just doesn't make any more sense than imperial... perhaps less.
After all... there are only 10 kinds of people in the world - those who understand binary math, and those who don't.

I remember as a youth when all our road signs were in mile. They made the change in the mid or late 70's. I dont know what the costs were but if Canada did it, I'm sure our rich neighbour could afford it too.
