The only BCs I've used are rental sherwood silhouette. They were very comfortable and seemed like they would do the job, and they must be durable if they are used as rentals. Other than if I want integrated weight, is there any reason I should purchase a more expensive BC?

I would say that a BC is good as long as it fits you right. Personally I am not sure if more expensive=better. Best would be if you can try out a few before deciding. Make some search on this board about various types of BC..................and definitely look into a BP+Wing for your consideration.

Good luck and enjoy your BC hunt!!!

What is a BP+Wing? Remember I'm a newbie.

I agree with the fact that more expensive is not always better. I do know quite a few people that dive with various BCs,, unfortunately I can't try any of theirs because of size. (I'm 5'6 130 pounds) So I can only try ones in the shop on dry land, is that a good test of their fit?

Also is integrated weight worth more money? I've only used BCs without. The only person I know that insists on integrated weight say it is because he has a big beer belly and a weight belt doesnt fit him.

"Worth more" is a subjective term.

Regarding the backplate ... it's a hard metal (or "plastic") plate worn like a backpack. It holds your tank(s) and 'wing style' BC. I use a BP but I'd not suggest you run out and buy one. Learn to dive; try one while you are learning.

I recommend you rent or borrow as many different types of gear as you can before you buy. As for trying it on in the shop it's pointless other than to tell if it "fits" you. It's how it works in the water that counts. You can visit my website (see the signature) and read more about what I have to say regarding gear. And there are pictures of a backplate.

I compleetly agree, unfortunately I don't know anybody that dives that is close to my size, and there isn't much selection of rental gear.

Do you think integrated weight is worth more money? I know it's subjective, but I'm looking for opinions of people like you that may have experienced both.

I dive a backplate and wing, with integrated weights. In terms of weights, I've really enjoyed the integrated weights. To me, it feels much more comfortable, and helps with trim.

Again, this is a very personal thing, and can depend on the type of diving you do (water temperatur, exposure protection, etc). I agree with the previous posts, i.e. if at all possible, you should try the gear out. Getting the Silhouette is not a problem, the issue is if you discover that there's another one that suits you betterm and you've already sprung for the cash...

An option, if you really want to purchase now, could be to buy one of the rental units. Many shops will sell some of them on a regular basis to keep their stock "fresh." This could save you money now, and in the event you want to "upgrade" sooner than expected.

I agree that more expensive is not necessarily better, but being too cheap now could end up costing you more money later.

Good luck, and happy holidays!

Alex

You need to advertise yourself on this board and other areas so you can meet with others who do dive regardless of whether or not you now know them.

I have never used an integrated system; I started with a "horse collar" and weightbelt then switched to a jacket style and weight belt and now use a backplate and weightbelt (unless I am diving in my wetsuit; in that case I don't need a weightbelt but I have no ditchable weight so if the crappola hits the fan I'll have to ditch the entire kit).

Integrated, in my opinion, is a "solution" for folks who dinna like wearing a weight belt. They still are carrying the weight but it's not on their waist/hips. I use a DUI W&T system for a weight belt. It's like a weighbelt with a pair of suspenders; the weight is supported by my shoulders, not my aching back and hips. It also allows me great latitude (and longitude as well) in the positioning of my weights.

Again, try try try before you buy and cry.

Where are you located? Your profile does not mention where you live. If you are close to Kittery, ME we can get together some time and chat or dive. I have some gear I no longer use that you could try.
