I dive a backplate and wing, with integrated weights. In terms of weights, I've really enjoyed the integrated weights. To me, it feels much more comfortable, and helps with trim.
Again, this is a very personal thing, and can depend on the type of diving you do (water temperatur, exposure protection, etc). I agree with the previous posts, i.e. if at all possible, you should try the gear out. Getting the Silhouette is not a problem, the issue is if you discover that there's another one that suits you betterm and you've already sprung for the cash...
An option, if you really want to purchase now, could be to buy one of the rental units. Many shops will sell some of them on a regular basis to keep their stock "fresh." This could save you money now, and in the event you want to "upgrade" sooner than expected.
I agree that more expensive is not necessarily better, but being too cheap now could end up costing you more money later.
Good luck, and happy holidays!
