narcT once bubbled...
It easier to do extended surface swims with a back inflate? Your joking right?

I want to see you do an extended surface swim with a BP/wing, double LP104 and an LP80 under your right arm:bonk:

I have had to di it for time in training.

Besides that SCUBA is made for swimming under water. You don't need it for swimming on the surface.

I've done extended surface swims with LP112's and a 40cft deco bottle with no problem. A little air in the wing, you lay back like you're in your favorite recliner and you can kick as leisurely or hard as you want. I never use my arms, they are just folded across my stomach, so the deco bottle doesnt interfere in the slightest.

Maybe the real problem is that YOU'VE never actually tried this, so you don't understand it???

In regard to the original question of jacket vs wings, I will agree with the Transpac II recommendations. I started out with a jacket style BC, quickly figured out it wouldnt suffice for the type of diving I wanted to do and started looking at alternatives.

I had never heard of BP/Wings before, and I ended up with a TPII instead. The modular system allows you to change with your needs and mine has worked well in every situation I dove.

For someone not wanting to go to a back plate, the TPII is a viable alternative.

And you can stick as many D-rings on it as NarcT wants too! :D

No I have never done it. I always take off my Zeagle Tech back inflate when I hit the surface and lay on it like a surf board. So your right, I don't have a clue what your talking about....

Heh your right. I'll have to try to learn how to ignor those 2:D

Think about what type of diving you envision yourself doing. I know this is not an easy thing to do, I remember saying "why would I want to take a Nitrox course, that sounds way too technical."

Now I am doing lots of extended range diving. So I am glad that I started off with a Zeagle Ranger that allowed me to get into tech diving and get some experience before I had to "upgrade" to a BP/Wings.

If you think that you will be getting into tech diving, IMHO go with the BP/wings.

As far as the surface swim with BP/wings or a wing style BCD, Cave Diver is right on. You get into a nice comfortable position, cross you arms and start your nice easy surface swim. You look over your shoulder every once and a while to make sure you are still on course, no problem.

Good luck with your quest

Thanks again for all the information it truly is invaluable.

And as for Jepuskar I have found it is virtualy impossible to ask a question about gear without some kind of argument. But its very easy to pick out the ones who just argue because thats what they use versus the ones how have tried them all and have choosen one or the other for whatever reason.

One more thing can anyone tell me where i can get information on the TPII. Do they have a web site?

www.diverite.com.

I know that Ocean Planet in Tempe (Mill & Broadway) carries the Dive-Rite line.
