Thanks everyone for the pictures of the compass functions on both computers -- super helpful! One more question: does the Perdix 2 also have a way to set a heading marker on its compass also?

Rob, great questions. My best suggestion for proceeding at this point would be:
  • go to the Shearwater site and read the latest manuals and all of the release notes for the software upgrades since the manual sw version. You should do this for the one you end up buying anyway.
  • go and play with both of them to see how they feel, how they look, and how the interface (2/4-button) works for you.

One other note: for the Teric, there are several 3rd-party options to allow bungee mounting, and other strap styles. You are not limited to only the poly strap. Perdix has bungee mounting capability built in and comes with elastic straps.

Yes, but only visible when the 3rd row compass is showing. Teric can show North and your Mark on all screens.

The decision will come down to a head or heart decision.

Watch format, nice, but smaller. 'Block' format, larger and more info (square format, so 3 rows of 3 data).

That compass feature around the edge of the round Teric is really neat, but there's rough equivalence in the Perdix's compass displayed in a slightly different way.

edit: see that the Teric is "standard" wireless charger compatible, so shouldn't need specialist cradles when away, just a normal iPhone wireless charger will do.

Am facing this 'problem' at the moment as I have some open circuit cave diving coming up this year and need a second decent computer to back up the trusty Perdix. Do I get another Perdix, or a shiny shiny Teric which would be so good for warm water OC diving. Such a first world decision!

4 rows of data. Top row; mode, depth, ascent rate and battery. Second (Deco) row; NDL/Deco/SS, right position is custom in Rec mode. Third (Info) row; 3 custom slots from a list of 36 choices including 3 doubles. Bottom row; dive time, active mix. And, of course, the floating north pointer. All infinitely readable.

It's extremely impressive!

But Shirley the screen typeface must be smaller than a Perdix?

OK, challenge time: those with both; need a picture of both together for us all to compare!

And that floating compass pointer really is the dog's bollocks. Such an effective user interface; Shearwater are so darn good at UIs.

Here is the Perdix 2 and the Teric side by side. They are both awesome.

Not looking for things to criticise! They're so shiny -- own three Shearwaters and looking for another!

The Teric is a smaller font, so could be less easy to read for people of that certain age where close-up seems to move further away, eventually needing arm extensions.

Think that the Perdix would be more rugged when thrown in a bag with a load of dive kit. Mine's lasted many hundreds of boat dives being thrown into a sack with the other kit -- SMBs, spools, knives, torches, etc. But the Teric would be more of a wearable, although would need to be carefully placed after removing it from a drysuit whist undressing and not rolling around in a boat.

Bottom line, you can't go wrong with either.

"visible at night without having to push a button" display
Emmitive (? spelling) displays are really nice in dark conditions. On the other hand, the one on my Cobalt 2 is very hard and at times impossible to read in bright, sunny conditions such as sometimes occur in the shallows. I also dive a wrist unit Oceanic Worldwide VT3 which has an LCD display, probably much like your puck; easily read in bright conditions but I have to shine a light on it at night. Diving both, I'm covered either way.

Richard.
