I'm not looking for this to be a this vs that thread but comments are appreciated.

A couple of days ago I took Sherwood's Reg Tech course and enjoyed the time spent looking at their older and newer reg workings.

I've never really been a fan of Sherwood equipment (just me) but was impressed with their SR-1 Reg. The lesser model 1st stages were well designed and easy to work on too..... but just not my cup of tea. They appear to be well suited for rental work.

So here's my question:
The first batch of SR-1s had a problem with a dry o-ring in the 1st stage that should have been lubed. That ended up being an easy Fix in follow-on units.

Anyone with personal experience with the SR-1 please post your experience and comments PRO or CON.

Thanks !!

I have a SR-1. I have just under 50 dives with it. It has preformed flawlessly. I have had no problems with it. It breathes better than the oceanic rentals I used for OW certification IMO. I know they had some problems with the first ones made but I believe they have solved that problem. I haven't had any problems with mine.

Yes, the rep was very up front about the one issue they've had but showed me the exact fix they used, pretty simple.

IMO it's an over engineeded reg with way more parts than is needed. The 2 piece piston is asking for problems. For years Sherwood keep their regs simple and reliable, not so with the SR-1 and I understand they have also re engineered the Brute...it as fine the way it was.

Looked at those also, I understand what you're saying about simple on the Brut.

I believe when you see the slight change they made to the Bruts 1st stage, you'll feel more confident that it's no where as complicated as the SR-1 and maintains the simple features it had before.

Islandheart,
Like Herman, I am a fan of the old Sherwoods. At one point I had four--still have one. Except in pictures, I have never seen the new Brut. Exactly what are the changes?

I've seen one; it had IP creep of 7-10 PSI brand new and cracked at over 2" of water. Just adjusting the cracking effort is a bit of a procedure. There's also a nasty venturi assist, I suspect to knock a bit off the WOB numbers on a test machine, but results in an un-natural feel when diving.
