Finally !!! power is back on... been 3 days without. I am in Harris county Texas and have seen allot of damage here. All food in the fridge is wasted... been trying to get ice for the last 2 days. Lucky for us, we were prepared with enough water and propane for cooking and boiling water. Very little gas stations open and the ones that are have long long lines.Have taken a few pictures and will try and post them as soon as I can.

Side note.... was supposed to go out on the MV Spree on the 20th to the Flower Gardens... Good News... talked to the folks and the boats are fine. As of now, the trip is still on... Will need the de-stress from this last week.

DD, I'm thinking it's you......No one here--and there were many(generators) agoin' locally for Ike and 100% of our little city agoin' (for 1-3 weeks) for Rita--that I'm aware of has a battery powered CO detector......
I guess that's an indicator of why CO is such a big killer nation wide. Even all electric homes have some risk, so a plug-in, battery back-up, digital screen & alarm is best, one for each bedroom is best: $42 free shipping Amazon.com: Kidde KN-COPP-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Battery Backup and Digital Display: Home Improvement

We can say "do not run indoors," but I can imagine the rationalizations that can happen. For anyone who owns a generator: $33 free shipping Amazon.com: Kidde Battery-Operated Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Digital Display #900-0146: Home Improvement

Good news. BTW, eggs last a lot longer warm than most people think. I was without a fridge this week for a few days, albeit at cooler house temps. If you have enough water, float them. If they float, bad; sink, good; wobble on the bottom, cook now!

Boy it has been a long week and it is only Monday!

Hurricane Update - 2 - the aftermath...

It seems like the hurricane hit a week ago rather than just two days ago. Ann and I weathered the storm just fine and our house does not appear to have suffered any major damage. In talking with the rest of the staff, everyone is fine and no-one had any major damage so far (Barney and Barbara have not been able to get to their new house on Tiki Island). Until today, we had no power and Pat and Teresa Croll generously let us stay in their house, set-up a bank of computers and move in. Yes, they had power and Internet service so Oceanic Ventures World-Wide Headquarters and Ann's command central temporarily relocated to Katy, Texas.

The store did not fare so well. The roof lifted on our building and was destroyed allowing water the enter the store soaking the ceiling, rug and counters. Of course the items stored in these area also got wet. However while we did lose a lot of stored paper, much of the inventory was spared as were most of the computer systems. We spent today removing wet paper and cardboard from the store, drying out wet items, drying, sorting and storing repair parts and sweating. Yes, that's right the store has no power like 1.9 million other customers.

This evening, the water is being extracted from the carpets and a de-humidifier is supposed to be installed to help remove the moisture in the office. The specialists tell me that it will take two to three days to entirely dry the suite. By then we hope to have power re-established.

To help get things going, we will be relocating the computer systems to our house (we got power back today!) as well as rerouting the phones so you can once again hear Ann's smiling voice.

Since Houston is currently under a curfew and our staff are trying to get their lives back in order, we plan to restart classes next week.

Please be patient with us during this time, we may not be as responsive as we want to be because of having our operation spread out all over Houston but we will try and get back to you as soon as we can.

If you need anything, please call us. If we cannot find it right away, we'll dig through the boxes and meet you somewhere to deliver it (or you can stop by when power is restored -- I can't take too much heat although I did enjoy the cold beer across the street at the Fedora Lounge). We hope to have the store back in operation in a week. There may be some movements during the repair phase but we will keep you posted as to our where abouts in the area (don't worry, we are not moving).

We are all thankful that we were lucky and none of our staff was injured. There are a lot of people in the Houston Area who were not so lucky and we are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers.

We hope that those of you in the area came through the storm with few problems. We really feel lucky and look forward to getting back to diving in the beautiful places around the world (like the Beautiful Blue Lagoon shown in the photo above).

If you have a moment, please let us know how you are doing, we would like to know how our extended family is doing and how your fared.

Please remember, when things look too tough to handle, remember your last dive and how peaceful and beautiful things were.

Sincerely,

Eric Keibler

So what happened with the lioness on Bolivar? Zoo keeper couldn't get her out, they spent the night in the church with 4 other people - feeding her well, they sent a Text message saying "5 people and one African lion in Bolivar church" that caused some confusion - but last I heard she was loose on Bolivar? Sounds like they evaced the people, left her behind...?

Poor tame lioness is probly scavenging fish in the brush. :shakehead:

Wish I could think of something I could help with, but any volunteers who show up are also people to be shelter, fed & supplied, more to fill the porta potties - so I don't guess I have the skills to offset such.

The big electric corporation here sent a crew down Xcel sends 28 to help re-energize East Texas "Additionally, Xcel Energy has released six contract employees with Sturgeon Construction from jobsites in Carlsbad to help in this effort, Reeves said. Previously, Xcel released 15 Asplundh tree-trimming personnel to assist in the cleanup from Hurricane Gustav, and these individuals continue to work in the Beaumont area, Reeves said."

Plainview's personnel director flew into Hobby Wednesday night for a seminar, tho?! :silly:
Since it was no secret Ike was approaching the Gulf Coast, Harrell tried to make sure it wouldn’t be a wasted trip by calling Houston City Hall, the police department and the seminar itself. All told him the same thing: there was no hurricane warning.

So Harrell set off for Houston, arriving late Wednesday.

His first clue something was wrong was when he was being shuttled to his hotel. He noticed long lines at the grocery stores and gas stations.

Then, first thing Thursday morning, he found out the hotel, which was located on the coast, was closing and an evacuation of the area had been ordered.

“The race was on,” Harrell said.
