Re drymouth, though, I've always wondered if the reason metal-cased 2nds give less drymouth has less to do with the case than the fact that most of them are older designs with very limited venturi boost. I've done much of my diving over the years with various MKV/X 109/BAs. When I use newer gear I am often shocked by the amount of venturi boost on many of the newer regs, and the accompanying drymouth, even with the boost lever turned all the way down. I suspect this is an unintended consequence of the way regs are tested these days. Cranking up the boost allows them to produce better numbers on the machine.
Good point. I personally have never liked the forced air/inflation feeling many new regs have when you turn the venturi assist up. Scubapro advertised the venturi assist as being "moderate" on and the Balanced Adjustable and "high" on the G250 when it was first introduced in the mid 80's.

Lots of assist does help the quantitiative "work of breathing" numbers, but it does nothing at all for the more qualitative "natural" feel of how the reg breathes. But then it's probably a lot easier for the marketing types to push quantitiative data than more subjective qualitative measures.

The discontinuation of the G250 would however be very bad news as it is a much better cold water reg than the G250.

You can pry my G250HPs from my cold, dead hands.

I think the G250 being such a dry breather (too dry for some) has a lot to do with it being a good cold water reg. Been using mine in 36-38 degree water with no problems other than a dry mouth. Decided to use a 109 this past Saturday and had minor problems in the water and a hard freeze up while flushing it with fresh water outside.
