The link above doesn't seem to work. Maybe it's down temporarily? Or maybe the URL has changed? I'd be real interested to take a look around the website since I'm considering doing some Monterey diving after I get my certification in May. I'm a WWW though - getting certified in the Keys.

I'd really like to change that though or I'll never manage to to get the experience I need to become a decent diver, so I need some convincing. Maybe Chuck's website would help!

As far as finding dive buddies go, I'm in the same boat as RMichaelson86. How receptive would the local crowd down in Monterey be to a 48 year old female newbie? One of my past instructors is the same age and sex as me and hangs out down there a lot (you all probably know her I would suspect), but unlike me, she has LOADS of experience and has a lot of followers rather than being a followee like me.

Anyway, just trying to find some motivating factors that would give me the push I need to join all of you in the Monterey "icebox". ;)

monterey fred or known as breakwater fred, this guy is a 55-60 old male large pot belly and drives a little red truck , i think a toyota, but anyway i have had two personal incidents with him myself and ishie together, i had to threaten him to leave ishie and i alone (bodly harm to him), he passes out cards that say (dive buddy fred) he has actully assalted but not enough to be charged, i warn all fred is not all there, this guy is one to look out for and there have been many threads on him so do a search and you will find many complaints of fred!!!

Wow thanks, I've never seen this guy, or at least paid attention ... but now I'll keep a watch out!!

jim ernst:
ya now that is a big plus!! and it seems to me i remember they are better then a dive knife and emt shears if you get in a tangle, also if you have a shark encounter they are a good food source and replaceable (expendable) dive buddy!!

Yep!! The dive goat is truly the ultimate buddy. :D

Whoa... Man, I swear... Not even the ocean is safe from frickin' perverts! :censored: :soapbox:

He forgets people. When I was diving off John's boat, he came up and was asking me if I was going off a boat, and which boat, then asked me if I'd ever dived Point Lobos, and when I said I had, he said we should dive Point Lobos together, etc... so I wandered over to the people getting ready to head out, and he went away. This was after he'd approached me with Jim twice. The first time we didn't know any better and said yes (like our second dive out of OW), but we were already geared up and after waiting for him for FORTY-FIVE minutes in the breakers, we ditched him.

Second time, Jim told him to go away. He sat in his truck parked next to us muttering to himself.

I ran into Fred last year at lovers, he came up to me and started asking if I belonged to a dive club, I asked him if his name was Fred, he said yes, I yelled out to everybody there
(a buch of scubaboarders), hey look it's Fred, he left.

Is the guy just lonely? That is what comes to mind.

It doesn't sound like anyone here has had any negative experiences with the guy.. who knows. I would think if he was a criminal someone would have filed a report.
