From your OWN words, from your OWN perspective—not an agency perspective---FROM YOUR VIEWPOINT---how would you define what makes a good diver?

I am not interested in answers such as PADI says, NAUI says, SDI says, GUE says, DIR says SSI says, my scuba guru says, some guy I read once on Scuba Board says, and so on. I want to know how you as a person—you specifically define what makes a good diver?

If you mention an agency in your answer, I am going to assume that you are NOT A GOOD DIVER, since you are unable to answer the question as asked and therefore I will assume you are unable to follow the basic training instructions you received from said agency. And being unable to follow basic instructions you are therefore not a good diver.

So what do YOU THINK—what makes a person a good diver?

A few things-
1) mental control- being able to think through problems and not lose control or do irrational things
2) mental discipline- being able to set limits and stick to them, and being able to set goals and work to achieve them
3) experience and training- diving in different environments and different conditions
4) diving regularly
5) respect for the water and the environment- having a healthy respect for the dangers present on every dive.

First and foremost, attitude ... a good diver is someone who starts out WANTING to be a good diver. That comes from within. Skills can be learned ... attitude cannot.

A good diver is someone who's yearning to learn, and always seeks to improve his or her knowledge and skill level. They also have developed a notion of where their skill level lies with respect to the type of diving they're doing, and recognize their limitations.

A good diver is someone who has learned how to overcome the "tunnel vision" that comes from placing a scuba mask on your face, andd maintains an awareness of what's going on around them during a dive.

A good diver is someone who works at improving their basic skills, makes an effort to be a conscientious dive buddy (when they have a dive buddy), and is considerate of both the dive site and other divers who are using it.

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

Do it easy and grateful diver have just about said it all in my opinion; however here is my 0.02p

1. Somebody who is not afraid to say no!
2. Somebody who LISTENS!
3. Somebody at home with his/her own diving abilities and knows what needs to be worked on!
4. Somebody familiar with his/her own kit.
5. Punctual.
6. Sensitive to the needs of others.

Im sure there are others, but these are the ones important to me. My biggest bug bear is the I know it all and i aint listening to you macho types (usually the ones who end up in trouble and take somebody else with them!)

Hm...such a subjective question.

More comfortable in the water than out...air control and management are more natural than breathing...is part of the water, not the interloper in it...respect is mutual by being in it and the other beings there...is more interested in the possibilities than the limits, to make it better for all now, and our future!

Hoa!

Thank you for the thoughtful replies so far and also thank you to the person who rated this a one star ie terrible thread! What was I thinking asking what makes a good diver on a diving web site!!

I think some other important qualities of a good diver is situational awareness and consideration for fellow divers. I been down with some groups that were all over, skulling and kicking everywhere, with complete disregard for other divers or the nature around them. There's nothing worse than trying to enjoy a dive when your mask and hoses are contantly at risk of getting clipped by a careless diver.
