Stephen Ash:
Yep. Sorry.

An STA just allows a plate to be mated to a single tank... ie. "Single Tank Adapter". It has not NADA to do with the wing.

You need to get a singles wing... or just start using your twin 80's.

:11doh:

You still got a SCREAMIN' deal!

It seemed so... this is why I bought it without knowing what in the hell I'm doing! :14:

Thanks for your continued help.

CF...

Take a look thru these pics. They show a couple of different STAs. Using the pics and Tobin's explanation above you can see just exactly what an STA does and doesn't do.

Okay, I see how it works.. but why can't you just slip a cam strap through the slots on the BP/W and then around a single tank and just crank it down? Will it wiggle if you do that? Will the non-round shape you create put too much stress on the cam buckle?

Maybe I need to get my setup and physically look at it before this becomes clear.

You can but YES IT WILL wiggle and feel sloppy and you will not like it,,,get the Oxycheq STA and you will love it!!!!

I use a Diverite SS BP, DiveRite Rec-wing ,Oxycheq STA, and harness , it can (and I have) be used on both singles and doubles.Love mine although I only use it for single steel 98 and 19cf pony and I use trim pockets that mount to my tank straps and have a couple of small weight pockets on my harness waist strap.....I use a Halcyon ss BP and Explorer 55 wing for my double 98 setup and I love both setups 100% Way more comfortable and secure than any bc I have ever tried and I don't see myself ever going back to a traditional jacket or wing BC,,,,,BP-wing all the way....

Direct mount systems (no sta) rig as you describe. Whether or not this results in a stable tank is a function of other factors, including how you choose to secure your wing to your plate, the height and "flatness" of any grommets in the center panel of the wing, and your attention to detail when mounting a cylinder. With some plate / wing combos the use of a STA is a great aide. With other designs you don't need a STA at all.

Don't worry about the cambands, the webbing is very strong. Whether or not you can successfully preload the bands enough to keepthe tank secure is a different issue.

Good luck,

Tobin

Using the camband slots will not draw up or narrow the center width.

If it's possible to mount singles without STA, is it possible to mount doubles without using tank bands? i.e., if I had two spacers of the appropriate radius, which would look like a )( shape, could I slide a long cam strap through the slots on the BP/W, around both cylinders, and cinch it down?

Seems like it might be possible if the cam slots in the BP were not very close together.

except that many doubles wings do not have camband slots in them. They do sell what you are describing however, it is meant for independent twin mounting.

Luckily, this wing does have slots on it. And at this point, I would probably want dive the doubles independent since I don't want to invest in a manifold. $100 - $200 here and there is really adding up, and I already need to get a whole new reg set either way. :(
