One huge problem I have with the conspiracy theories is that cadaver dogs, trained in sniffing out decomposing HUMAN bodies, have repeatedly hit on the cave. I suppose he could've offed a homeless person and carried them into the cave, but again, I also feel the most likely reality is that he is in the cave.

It's tough to fool a dog; I'm with you on that.

My perception at least is that Vortex has never tried very hard to keep OW divers out of the overhead.A quick search on youtube brings plenty of examples. The old website had a laughable photo of divers in the cave with OW gear (including snorkels)

What do y'all think about Ginnies rule of no lights without cave/cavern certification (and a wristband to prove it) ? Seems a simple way to keep OW divers out of dark spooky places.

Personally I dont much care for regulations or wristbands and will probably never dive Vortex again, just thinking out loud.

Blaming Vortex for not keeping OW divers out of the overhead is like blaming bars for people becoming alcoholics. Take responsibility for your own actions.

Next thing the "abducted by aliens" theory will be floated.

Compare apples to apples please. Telling someone ( oh yes, you can safely go down to the gate ) is not the same as serving someone a drink. I have heard former and present employees tell OW divers its ok. If you want to compare it to something compare it to a new OW diver doing 150ft dives. They can only do it soo long before something happen or the wrong person say oh I can go 200. However if anyone is responsible for that mindset at Vortex, it goes back to the original management.

My point was that no matter if its diving, drinking, driving, whatever, in the end its the individuals responsibility to make the decision for themselves, no matter what someone else tells you is safe or not, or what rules and regulations are put into place.

Legislation wouldn't do a thing...

this victim has already proved he'll break the chain hinge and install his own padlock. He also knew the training requirements of cave diving certification as he'd inquired about those at a local shop.

He knew the "rules". He knew the dangers.... yet you "can't fix stupid".

That was what I was saying, probably a bit too subtly.

The hoax theory has been around for a while, although it was not emphasized publicly. I have trouble with it because if it is a hoax, it is not a a really good one, and there is a much easier and and more effective way to pull off a hoax than this.

The problem with planning a hoax like this in a cave you know well enough to be deep inside planting evidence is that you have to know that suspicions will be aroused after highly experienced divers are unable to find your body. If you want to have a hoax that leaves people sure you are dead, then you will have to find a way to explain the fact that there is no body.

That can be accomplished easily by telling friends for months that you are into deep ocean shore diving, setting personal records for depth with each dive. Park you car near a suitable site, leave some personal effects behind, and walk away. No one will question why a body lost at sea was not found.
