Good, at the rate you lose fins you need another pair.

Ah I was tempted - but think 4.5 pairs of Jets should last me a while ;)!

We'll be out at Breakwater for an Essentials class, so please drop by and say hi. Especially if anyone is offering hot chocolate or coffee.

I'm hoping that it'll warm up soon!

If conditions are good I'll be diving this weekend, but I doubt any of you would be interested in joining me. I have that warm water vacation diver tall skinny guy to take out to show him Monterey diving, he's going to freeze. I expect our dives will be 20 minutes or less, I say dives as if there may be more than one, lol. Probably not.

Have him pre-fill his suit with warm water before entering. That way you'll be halfway to the metridiums before he notices just how cold 50F really is.

By my read of the forecast we may have one of those rare weekends when the water is warmer than the air. And with rain to boot. It's got me seriously thinking of switching to a drysuit for my Essentials class. (Mike M., want to tell me "just don't do it"?)

Well considering the time frame I wouldn't. If you had a few more weeks i wouldn't tell ya not to. Yeah it screwed me up good but at the same time it was good to train in the equipment I am using. I lost out on some of the practice but still gained a lot from the class.

I agree with Mike. My Essentials class was my second dive in a drysuit, and though I learned a lot, I would have picked up on a lot more without the extra task loading. If you haven't used one before, getting in a drysuit feels like your first confined water dive in class - you flail around trying to move and have no sense of your buoyancy or how to control it :)

Mike, can you say more about how the drysuit screwed you up?

I've got only five drysuit dives. Enough to get past the worst of the buoyancy problems, but far from proficient. (I'm not even sure I'd call myself proficient in a wetsuit any more.) I expect I could hover in a drysuit nearly as well as in a wetsuit. It's moving and changing depth that I need to work on. I'd be comfortable doing fun dives in a drysuit; but I'd have to focus more on buoyancy control. (I hardly have to think about it in my wet suit; although I'm sure there is ample room for improvement.)

I don't want to spend all my attention managing the drysuit. But, I also don't want to have to end dives early for being cold.

I think if we were expecting warm, sunny weather I'd probably not be considering diving dry. But I'm afraid the surface interval is not going to help warm me up much. Don already knows I'm fixated on the cold. He suggested I ask you about your taking Essentials in a new drysuit. I appreciate whatever you have to say about it.
