I have the Devils throat t-shirt, but will go again if there are people that feel the need for the Throat and have to go. As a newish diver, many years ago I was passed, in the throat, by a rather freaked out woman:shakehead:. On the way past she kicked off my mask and kicked me pretty hard in the head a couple of times:shocked2:. I had my camera, it was dark, it was silty from her kicking. I found the mask in the sand but had no way to clear it till outside along the wall. I could see the light at the end so I kept kicking till out along the wall and cleared my mask. Roberto the DM was wide eyed and laughing at me once he figured out what had happened. We had pre-arranged the divers order and Roberto knew she passed me when we got outside along the wall. I was pissed and and came up with all kinds of new UW hand signals. Roberto literally gave me an underwater pat on the back. At the time, All I knew was that everything was blurry with my mask flooded. I just figured as long as I had air I was doing good. I had some words for this woman on the surface. She was very apologetic but I was still miffed at her. I was happy my original certifying OW DM had trained us to remove our mask and look around when getting certified. It may be blurry but you can still see. No need to freak and bolt to the surface. Try it some time. You never know when you might lose your mask or it have forcefully removed in a swim through. It was a character builder that I can laugh about now...
PezLeon-eater, Okay you made me look... I think Punta Sur Sur has been called that long before you or I ever dove there. I have it in my 1st log book as South Point South on 04-02-01. Punta Sur Sur is Spanish for South point South. I remember not knowing what Punta Sur Sur meant and when I asked, I was told South Point South was the gringo name. On that day in 01 with Aldora divers, Jorge Marin was the DM, Angel was Captain. I also have logged that I chummed the water. I lost my breakfast from the rather large wave action and losing sight of the boat on the drift line. I remember the dive well. I remember the little fish eating my breakfast. Seas where not to bad when we started but it was really a rockin' to get back in the boat after the dive. This was the 1st time I ever got sea sick. It can get pretty rough down there depending on the winds. We've been down there when there is no current and calm seas as well, just depends on the day. This is a great deep dive. Myself, I'm kind of partial to the Cathedral. Further south, Maracibo is an outstanding, advanced, deep dive as well. You can do an on boat SI and go to Maracibo shallows for the 2nd dive, weather permitting. I like to do that when on Aldora's big/fast boat, Felicity. I can't imagine doing these on anything but a 120 tank. You will most likely be consulting the nitrogen police with obvious close monitoring of your computer.
BTW, Paso de Cedral is Cedar Pass. Punta Tunich is Tunich Point... I wish I was diving with you and your son today. Hope you both have some great dives. Maybe we'll see ya'll in March again?

Like others have said, it's not as big a deal as some have made it out to be. I wanted to dive the Devil's Throat on my first three trip to CZM, but wasn't able to because I was always with much lesser experienced dive buddies. When I finally got to go, at the end of the dive, I was wondering what the big deal was? I've been back to the throat several more times since then, but I won't feel like I missed out if I don't make it there on any given trip. Don't get me wrong, it's a very good dive in my opinion, but CZM offers countless very good dives.

I would be very surprised if any dive op on the island would take you there without first seeing your skills on previous dives with their own eyes, no matter what references you bring with you. Local ops generally don't care what cert level you have when deciding where they can take you. There are plenty of divers that only hold a regular open water cert, but have tons of experience and dive better than the average Rescue Diver with less experience.

I'd suggest that you change ops all together to one that can offer you the Throat if you have your heart set on it. That way they can have a chance to size up your skills.

Can you give us a brief trip report?

Don't know if others have had this experience with Devil's Throat, but I've done the site about 8 times, and have done almost as many routes. The last couple times, I'd describe what I dove as the "Devil's Ledge". You go in, take a left, it gets dark, real dark, then you take another left in the pitch dark. You go a little ways, and then you get to a ledge. I think the opening is about 3 or 4 feet wide by 7 or 8 feet? You basically get head down vertical, and then descend over the ledge. I've gone up the throat, down the throat, etc, so I've been there and done a dive that I would consider as having a "throat", but I've also done this ledge thing too.

A little late now, but I posted in another thread that I think a cool goal besides the... "First time to Coz. Gotta get to Devil's Throat" goal, would be to get to all 4 Palancar sites, and squeeze Santa Rosa in after a day or two of diving. Gardens as a "first dive this trip" dive, and then ease into the sheer wall in a day or two.

Has anyone done the "Devil's Ledge"? Would this be the result of where we got dropped on the reef, like, oops, we're a little too south, the current was a little stronger/weaker than anticipated, so this is the "throat" we're going to do?

Mariciabo on Saturday. Columbia Deep on Sunday and again today, I'm in heaven.

Propjoe Just my overinflated ego taking credit for a literal translation. The sopa de mariscos at Mr Sanchos was excellent today, tender chunks of octopus, lobster, conch, shrimp, mussels, and fish.MMMMMMM!

:confined: Get out of the jar!

Mmmmmmmmmmmm... That's ALL delicious!

I was thinking that Punta Sur Sur was named that when I showed up for this round of CZM-luv in 2006...

Who's your DM? Living vicariously, you know... :blinking:

Yes, I dove the "Devil's Ledge" one time and my dive light went out shortly after entering. No problem, my wife and her yellow fins were not far ahead so I just followed her. But one moment she was there and the next, poof, she was gone. Almost total darkness. Oh crap! Or something along those lines. Anyway, a few tentative kicks later the opening to the ledge appeared and I dropped down and out into the blue. That was a memorable visit to the Devil's Throat.

Isn't this a basic requirement for certification?

Well, If you put another dollar in, there are "requirements' and then there are "requirements."

As for getting kicked in the face, I once had the system running on that one. Night dive another member of the group flails a little and punches the wife in the face. No harm and mask stayed on barely. We drove him back to his hotel and he bought me a drink. Another dive, guy kicks her in the face. No harm done. We drove him back to his hotel and he bought me a drink. I kept crowding her close to him on dives after that, but to my sorrow I couldn't get him to whack her again..... :crying2:
