"LANGUAGE

Two official languages --- Filipino and English. Filipino which is based on Tagalog, is the national language. English is also widely used and is the medium of instruction in higher education.

Eight (8) major dialects spoken by majority of the Filipinos: Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilocano, Hiligaynon or Ilonggo, Bicol, Waray, Pampango, and Pangasinense.

Filipino is that native language which is used nationally as the language of communication among ethnic groups. Like any living language, Filipino is in a process of development through loans from Philippine languages and non-native languages for various situations, among speakers of different social backgrounds, and for topics for conversation and scholarly discourse. There are about 76 to 78 major language groups, with more than 500 dialects."

paolov:
nope. "F" the official letters of the country does not have the letter "F" unless they revised it again.

in the international context, of which we are in, it is the english structure that is observed

hence Pilipino is not used. in Philippine passports it is written Filipino, unless they revised the new ones again.

i don't think we would like to get another citation like the flag we have on PPD, it is an infraction of how the national flar is to be displayed.

am still awaiting ideas as well ....
i just checked with the kids = when determining the difference between Filipino and Pilipino "f" refers to the colloquialized language where it is a generally accepted mix of dialects and foreign influences

our everyday language is "filipino"

and the P is the person/citizen "ako ay pilipino" - this does not change the english reference to a philippine citizen as being "filipino"

"tagalog" USED TO BE indeed the "national language" but was changed to "filipino" because "cebuano" is also a language and "tagalog" is actually only spoken from parts of central luzon down to northern parts of mindoro... in fact a majority of the nation speaks "cebuano" or "visayan" (w/c is the "filipino" version of "tagalog") and the cebuanos (in particular) have long felt an afront when spoken to in tagalog - they prefer either cebuano or english

the old "tagalog" as national language has long been revised ever since the decentralization of the culture and doing away with the notion of "impreialist manila"

in issues like this it is best to ask grade schoolers... they're the most updated hehehehe

Jag

PS
to summarize: FILIPINO as opposed to tagalog

Matthew:
I believe so.
believe it

Jag

Ps
there's a little bonus too... many foreigners refer to us as "philipinos"... understandably because of the spelling of the country "philippines"... this will help correct the mistake
